Farmall Cub Surging- Solved!

It only surges a little but I will take the bumper spring out tomorrow and make sure it good and adjust that.
Below is a picture from TM Tractor Parts of inside the governor.
I have read in the manual to not turn the bumper spring adjustment in too far, it can interfere with the slow idle speed.
After looking at the spring on it, turn it in just small amounts at a time from where it was, and run the engine, it should help it to run steadier.
Below is a page from the Cub and LoBoy service manual, GSS-1411, telling about adjusting it at paragraph f on the page.

Quick question, when I adjust the governor and carb linkage when the throttle lever is either at low idle or high idle the linkage is snug when the engine is off. Is this right or should there be movement at both extremes of the range? I adjusted the linkage with the throttle lever in the high idle position.

As I remember, when the engine is off, the linkage ahead of the carburetor hits a solid stop, with the throttle lever wide open, or fully closed.

Well I took the bumper spring out and it looks like it's new. Put it back in and started the tractor and put it at mid idle to surge. I turned the bumper spring in probably 1/4 turn and the surging stopped. At the same time it resolved most of my popping at low idle, it barley does it at all now. The only time it acts like it surges maybe 1 and half times is when I lower the hydraulics and put them back up. Changing the high idle and putting the original IH jet back into the carburetor solved most of my soot problem on the spark plugs as well, I won't know how much till I get transmission oil in it and can drive it around some. Below is a picture of how far the bumper spring is turned in. Adjusting the bumper spring also dropped my low idle to 400rpms I adjusted it back to 500 but after a few minutes it creeped up to 560 so I had to turn it back down to 500. 1000002366.jpg

max torqure is about 1575(?) i think. max hp is 1800. plowing snow would be at max torque.
Yes but if I set it for 1500rpm and I load it up it will drop below max torque rpm. Having it at 1800 means when I load it up the rpm should drop right into 1600 and be at max torque.

Just and update, I finally got to drive the cub around today after all the repairs and adjustments. I am happy to say it runs great, going up a hill the governor actually works like it should and is much more responsive now.

Glad to hear that your persistence has paid off. And I enjoyed our conversation a few days ago. Stan
Hey Stan, here is a pic of the spark plug #1after running it yesterday. I checked the #4 and it looked the same. Before I changed back to the IH jet they were really black and sooty. 1000002368.jpg
