Has anyone switched from points ignition to electronic ignition on a kohler k301? The motor is a 1965 in a 1968 Cub Cadet 125. Does anyone have any recommendations on what electronic ignition system will work best? Thank you1000013150.jpg

worst thing you can do!!!! points are the MOST reliable thing around! Also THATS what the motors were designed for at the factory. Try changing that messes everything up.

That's good to know, thank you for saving me money and time. I just got the points cleaned and set this morning so we'll see how long that lasts

points require a cleaning every so often but other than that they are simple and reliable. ANYTHING electronic is trouble!!

The only other thing would be the condenser (capacitor) and the coil. It doesn't hurt to replace the condenser just as a preventative measure -- they do last a long time. Also, the coil can fail, but that is also a rare occurrence. Be sure, if you are checking the spark, that the coil secondary has a path to ground. If not, the high voltage, secondary winding, output voltage can get very high and short windings in the coil secondary.

This ignition system design is just like the cars had in the 70's and is way over design for a little 12 Hp Kohler engine.

Thank you guys for the information, I am new to this tractor and I am glad that I fpund this forum to help me. I got the tractor running and moving so now I'll service it and get a new lift frame for the mower deck
