electrical problem-farmall H

hi folks-just need to know if there is any electrical whiz out there that can help-my ammeter started going negativ about 5 amps when the tractor was running-i replaced the generator which i think was original delco or close to it-kept the regulator-polarized as instructrd and ran it-still shows a neg 5 amps-any ideas or fixes out there?-thanks hank

sounds like the regulator is stuck. Ground the F terminal on the generator and see if it charges then. If it does, either replace the regulator or open it up and look for burned or sticking contacts.

hi BD-well i checked the wiring-looks fine-used ohmmeter to look for shorts-found none-regulator has clean points-one set closed -the other open-closed set shows a spark when i open them up-tried that before when running to see if i had a charge-it went more negative-nothing looks burned-what's next-maybe a new regulator?-thanks-hank

hi BD-i put the meter on at rest-reads 6.05 volts -at 1/2 throttle or so it reads 6.01 volts-that tell you anything?-i was thinking i might need to take the generator and regulator to the shop and have it run up and checked out-possibly a lemon rebuilt??-let me know-i am going to alberta tomorrow for a few days-i'll contact you as soon as i get back-hank

Hank, I believe that is the next step. It wouldn't be the first bad rebuilt unit. Before you do that though, make sure your grounds are good.
Did you try the same test with the field terminal of the generator grounded?

Yes, ground the F terminal on the generator and start it up. Check the voltage at half throttle or higher. If it's charging, it will read 7 volts or higher. This will tell you whether the regulator circuit or the generator circuit is the problem. Once you know that, we can proceed.

hi john-i printed yor chart but didn't get all the way to the bottom-maybe my printer is off-what does the box below #4 say after generator on the left and replace voltage on the right?-hank

hi BD-i'll try that f terminal thing this am-and john-when your chart says regulator base does it mean the case of the regulator?-thanks-hank

Sounds to me that the generator ain't generatin. What did the voltage read before you started the tractor :?:
8)

hi-i think the gen may not be working-i'll take it in today to have it checked-my luck with rebuilts has always been lousy-thanks-hank

hi folks-well i took the first generator bac to napa and it was bad-so they got me a new one and ran it in the shop to check it out-it was ok-i installed it and polarized it-and it is not putting any juice in the battery at all-i'm going to take the tractor to a shop monday and have it fixed i need it asap and can't take more time now-thanks for the help-hank
