Cylinder head casting number

I have a 1949 Farmall C and need to replace the cylinder head. I can't locate the casting number which I believe I need to make sure I get the correct replacement part.

There is nothing on the outside so I removed the valve cover and the only thing I could find was 8 28 8 OR 8 28 S..... Is this the number I need to get the correct replacement head?

The engine is IH C113

What you have is the casting nunber telling you when that head was made. Almost any year for that engine should work. What you need is the part number. That number would end with something like R1 or R2.

It got water on it and is really corroded in places. One of the valves is stuck open. Since the only place here in Alpena (NAPA) has a 2 to 3 month turn around for a rebuild I figure that a used/new replace would work.

As common as that engine is, I figured it wouldn't be that difficult to find a good used one.... Turns out I'm not having much success in finding one.... (

I've looked on facebook marketplace, I've sent inquiries to several tractor salvage yards and asked if anyone on this site and another tractor site had one. My plan is to pull it into the garage and do the work this winter so I have some time.

I'd bet that Tim (tst) can fix it for you. If the only thing wrong is repairing the head and you have the tools and confidence to tackle the job, it's not difficult. You might even see if a machine shop would do the seats and valves and you do the disassembly and reassembly. JMHO Stan

I bet someone associated with this group could give you some useful connections. Might be other old tractor/car area clubs could turn you on to an old school machine shop.

If the head isn't cracked you might be surprised how well an old shade tree mechanic can clean up and lap the valves. These things are very overbuilt and have pretty loose tolerances.

If you want to clean it up get a suitable container and submerge it in household (4%) vinegar for about 3 or 4 days then high pressure water and wire brush will take care of most of what's stuck to it. Pics are some rims that I done that way. JMHO Stan
