How often do you see tachometers for cubs? How much do they usualy go for? I was just wondering if anyone could tell me.

Thanks, Ray

Original ones are kinda rare and sought after. Drive cables and drive gears are even rarer. Original units command very large prices. Repros are becoming almost common but usually lack the drive cable and the gear/drive for the distributor. Those are kinda needed..... If you search for tachometers there are a number of threads.

When I bought Rusty 6 years ago he really looked UGLY. Rusty/pitted sheet metal, a big dent in the gas tank and a knock in the engine. The tach, fast hitch, stainless emblems and a nice straight 11 bar grill were worth enough to sell off and the tractor was free. This is what it looked like AFTER cleaning it up:

The tach package I valued at $600 then and at least that now. All I ever did to the tractor was clean up and paint the tach and brackets, put in a "Ralph's" engine and it's my daily worker. My point is watch for ads, auctions, etc. and find one with a tach if you want one. Otherwise, they're not really worth it.

And Rusty is STILL ugly, but I like him. :||):

I currently own 4 Cub tach's. 3 are original and complete kits and one is a reproduction with no brackets or drive. The cables are still available from IH and drives are available from JP's. The drive and cable will run you $100-$125 for the 2. The tach's are rebuildable, but that is not all that cheap. I sent one of mine off to have it rebuilt and it was over $100 for the rebuild. Reproduction brackets run in the neighborhood of $75. If you are buying or selling keep in mind that condition and completeness mean a lot. You can spend a lot of money buying replacemnet parts or repairing broken ones.

on the subject of tachs, did the Cub use the same one as a 450D? I have the tach, but let the 450 manuals go with the tractor. Just curious. This post reminded me its on the shelf in the barn. John

The dial face will be wrong. The 450 tach will have data for 5 forward gears. The cub tach has only 3. I'm reasonably sure the drives and tach body are the same.
