Convinced the wife we ‘needed’ a ‘49 CUB…

Greetings all, I’m Tom from Mechanicsburg, PA. Airline pilot by day (and night), father of four while home on days off. My father has a ‘47 CUB that he purchased about 35 years ago, when I was in my twenties, that we’ve enjoyed immensely.
Fast forward to earlier this month, when I purchased a home on six acres, with two thirds of it wooded.
I knew immediately what I needed for grounds maintenance, a 75 year old CUB!

I’ve managed to find one close by from a twenty two year owner, that had everything I wanted, and at a great price… touch control with rear rockshaft assembly, a C22 sickle mower, Woods 59C belly mower, and a later model L-54 leveling and grader blade for snow removal. Was glad it had the lowboy version, as my father’s C-54 blade occasionally can’t raise high enough in a heavy snow. The deal also included a set of nearly NOS CUB tire chains, and a C193 moldboard plow for the wife’s garden. We close on the house the first week of December, and I can’t wait to put the old girl through her paces.

I feel like a kid at Christmas!

Welcome to the world of Cubs, Tom. You've found the best and most complete source of info for all things Farmall/IH Cub related that exists anywhere. And yeah, it's like a kid at Christmas!!!! Enjoy your new toys and have fun doing it. From Stan in Lower AL.

Tom, Welcome to the forum. What airline do you fly for?
Thanks everyone for the warm welcome.

I’ll be sure to make it to a CubFest. We have several pretty good small shows in central Pennsylvania, the kids really like the steam powered machines and hit & miss engines.

Bob I’m with American Airlines, as a captain based in Philly.
It sure beats working for a living, and now with the cub…driving around the neighborhood, just off idle in first gear moving at .00007 miles per hour, the headlight’s yellow 6 volt glow guiding me, has been absolutely therapeutic!

Peter, I’ve always loved that photo. A guy I fly with regularly has a hangar buddy that owns one of those, a Cessna T-50 “Bamboo Bomber”

I should try to recreate that picture in color!

The Mrs. has a temporary ban on aircraft purchases…even projects, until we’re settle in to the new house. She has relented on a motorcycle, a ‘78 Moto Guzzi that I have broken down to every last nut and bolt for restoration, and of course the cub.

I think I better lay low for a while…
