Can the input shaft seal be replaced on the hydraulic pump on a H/M without tearing the pump apart?
 
yes and no. LOL The big problem is unscrewing the drive lug. You will need to drop the pump, and remove the pump from the housing. Pump forms rear wall of housing. Once pump is out, insert piece of flat steel into the oil intake so it wedges the gears and keeps the shaft from turning. Once this is done, you can , if you are lucky, unscrew the drive lug, then replace the seal.

I had to dig out a manual to check, but it is a right hand thread, turns to the left to unscrew. On ours the spring that returns the lever to neural when the pump reaches maximum pressure broke many years ago and the end of it went through the pump. That spring is pretty tough and actually took little pieces out of the edges of the pump gear. When I tried to replace that seal a couple years ago I made a tool using a grade 5, 5/8 bolt and used my big impact wrench. After I broke the bolt I bought another pump from JP Tractor, installed a new seal in it, and put it in. Look at the pump gears through thew oil intake, and if you see some chips out of the edges of the gear you may have the same problem.

One note, the manuals show putting a brass or soft steel bar against the corner of the drive lug, and using a hammer to loosen it, driving it in the direction to loosen it. The shock will help break it loose.
 
Thanks John, I'll try the hammer and brass first then the impact if needed. I think there was just enough bend in the angle iron to minimize the torque.
