Back to six volt

the wiring on my 1951 is a mess…. It got me thinking…. Am I crazy for contemplating a return to six volts? The idea of hand cranking is appealing to me… I am going to order a new wiring harness anyway…. i don't like the clunky 12 volt alternator and the hole in my tin.. so i was thinking of getting a mini alternator. Why not gor back to original?

Nice video. This is a good time to repost mine:
Sweet! You'll get a chance to give the ol' Cub some exercise when the storm hits us today and tomorrow. Personally, my snowplow tractor is an Allis Chalmers IB with a 12v conversion and electronic ignition. Don't want any starting issues in the cold and it starts instantly. Looking forward to some cold seat time tomorrow.

As far as hand cranking a Cub, no problem, either, but my Cub doesn't get involved in snow work - just snow fun!

I agree no need to reinvent the wheel with 12v conversions. All three of my Cubs are 6v and they fire up on a single pull. My fuel, ignition and electrical systems are in manual specs so it’s like new. To each as they see fit but 6 volts system are fine if you understand them and keep your carburetor and ignition systems in spec.

A nephew's son converted to 12v since he would not have to get a 6v battery charger. My cub is still 6v and I do have a 6v - 12v charger. I do not start it in the winter however. Snow is removed using a snowblower. Vern

for the price of 6-v stuff IF you can ever find it and 12-v stuff go 12 and never look back! Got rid of ALL 6-v stuff here cept the JD 420 loader/backhoe tractor and I never use it since I got the mini stuff and the Michigan which are all 12-v! --- Just a personal pref and how deep your pockets are! They proud of that 6-v stuff!!! SPENDY!!!

I think the biggest convenience with the 12v alternator, is if and when it quits you can go to the parts store and get a replacement. With the 6v generator you have to find someone that knows what they are doing to rebuild, or be willing to learn yourself. That said I prefer 6v.

I think when you price the original six volt components, you’ll like the price of a mini 12v alternator better. If you want to go back to six volts, your call. I switched all my stuff to 12v when 6v components needed replacing. Just a reliable VR costs almost as much as an altenator or as much

Biggest issue I had was the VR and getting a good replacement. I went to mini alts on everything and now I don't even think of them or worry about them

I like 6 volt. They are my best starters. I can have shown off by starting my 6 volters in second with the pto on.

The battery is more expensive but it has more CCA. the VR is an issue and expensive but the expensive ones from Brillman and this one from napa have worked well for me napa VR 6 v VR851. Brillman also has excellent wire harnesses that will be correct and easy to install. Make sure 2 AWG cables are used.

As far as voltage regulators go, I've had bad luck with most of them dying after a short while so I put together a solid state unit to use instead. I bought a unit from "The Bonneville Shop" and installed it into the housing of a dead VR. So far so good.
