Air Compressor -- Recommendation

Folks,

My 6.5 HP Sears air compressor headed south this afternoon and looks to be toast. So a replacement is in order. At my age and level of use, I can not justify the good ones at TP Tools. I need something above the Sears, but not WAY above the Sears. Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks.

Bill

Bill, You might want to see what it would cost to just replace the motor and/or compressor if the rest of the unit is okay.

Bill, I replaced my compressor about five years ago and after doing a lot of research bought it at Tractor Supply. They still have the same 60 gal unit for $ 479. It has served me well .

Yes, Bob. That is plan A. This informal survey is plan B, should plan A prove to be too expensive. :)

First compressor was a shop built with a CH compressor on a modified propane tank. Ran it low on oil and it locked up ( dipstick said oil was ok). Forgot to turn it off after last use and four days later it was toast. Found a new replacement compressor (DeVilbiss) for $75. Later traded a tree stump for a Black Max compressor that needed motor. Found pully I needed for first compressor at scrap yard with motor attached ($8.) fixed the Black Max and posted a pix on FB and a friend gave me another with a bad motor. Then I found a crankshaft shop that will repair the CH compressor. If I fix them all I will have three good compressors! Wonder if I hooked them all together could I sandblast maybe? Or sell one or two of them to pay for repairs on first one ( antique with a story). What happened to yours? Motor or compressor, how does the rest of it look? Afaik, my friend has the compressor if you are interested.

I bought an 80 gal Industrial Air 3 stage compressor about 4 yrs ago. It has done about everything I have wanted it to do. I think I paid aroun $800 for it on sale a Rual King farm supply. I see they advertised for that price still every now and then. I had a 30 gal craftsman and hated it. I have a Quincy at school and it works well to but expensive.

Good Luck.

Local Honda parts and scrap yard always has 2-3-4 large compressors on the scrap pile. Wonder what went wrong with them. If you could pick and choose parts you could build a good one from castaway parts.

Just wanted to bring you folks an update on my air compressor. This is what happened to the compressor pump:

I noodled around and found the parts on ebay and rebuilt the pump. It should last as long as I need it.
