Acorns

If acrons are a sign of a bad winter we are doomed i have oaks all around my home when leaving the driveway sounds like someone popping baallons.

There have been a lot more acorns falling this fall than I remember. I have a metal roof on my house and I hear them falling constantly on it. The squirrels should have plenty to store away for winter this year.

Haven't check the acorns. But, black walnuts are more than plentiful this fall. Under some trees, ground is covered. Squirrels will have a fat and healthy winter.

Have enough black walnuts drying and stored in a large animal cage. Will start cracking and picking in late November.

We have one large walnut and two small walnut trees on the property and one 12 inch on the neighbor that is close to the line and overhangs us. All are pretty barren. I don't even know if I will bother to gather them this year. Verrn

I was wondering if you were going to have walnuts this year. Some of the trees around here are dormant, like Vern mentioned. The ones that are producing have smaller nuts than last year. I’m going to go through the motions of harvesting some, but still have a few pounds from last year.

We’re in an extreme drought area here around KC and points east along I-70. That probably explains the smaller nut size.

Guessing, I have about 20-30 lbs. of black walnuts hulled and drying in the large animal cage. Meat yield is 12 to 20%.

The nuts we picked up are moderate in size. Lot of small nuts on the ground that we left for the animals.

Hasn't rained in 3 weeks. Currently in moderate drought. Been in switching back and forth between extremely dry an moderate drought this summer.

Edit. Have hickory trees. Should check the mast, fallen nuts, and how much. Deer season is coming up.

Edit. 11 Oct. Yesterday wife and I picked up walnuts from one tree that produces baseball sized hulls/large nuts. Only about 5 gallons from this tree. Tree produces large nuts but only a few. Then picked up another 10 gallons of medium sized nuts.

Will get them hulled and drying.
