Many of you know we have Border Collies. Many of you have also met them at the Barnyard Bash. It is with great sadness that I announce the loss of Bailey, our oldest Border Collie. My daughter, Melissa, got her as a pup 15 ½ years ago. Melissa took great care of her for many years. After her marriage, Melissa had to give her up due to excessive shedding. Rosanne and I gladly added her to our group of Borders. A few years later she ran under the wheels of my truck as I drove in the yard. She had to have her hip totally rebuilt as a result. She had problems ever since but always manage to get around. She was an indoor dog at night since we knew she would be easy prey to the coyotes. She always made it a point to lay on the floor at the foot of the bed to protect us as we slept.
Even with her injuries she was able to play with the other dogs and got around fairly well. The last few years, though, we bagan to see some decline in her mobility and she was on medication. We knew her time was getting near to her struggles getting to her feet.
Friday morning, I noticed her trying to stand. I helped her up, but soon after I found her laying on the floor again. Just after noon, Rosanne called me to the kitchen. Bailey was on the floor having a seizure. We called the vet so I could bring her in but unfortunately, they had closed at noon. The seizure lasted almost five minutes. After that she could not stand on her front or hind legs. We took her to the animal emergency hospital where we made the decision to let her enjoy eternal peace.
We know Bailey is now out of pain and enjoying her time running around Doggie Heaven with Bandit, Flash and Dozer, who she had grown up with and had passed over the last few years.
Rest in peace sweet Bailey, you will be forever missed by Melissa, Rosanne and I, as well as your barnyard playmates, Gus, Joe, Reo, Gizmo and Molly.
Rosanne and Melissa are taking this loss very, very hard.
