1954 Farmall Cub 12V Coversion

A 26R will fit in a factory battery box. You can hook it up positive ground. Or you can hook it up negative ground by repolarizing the generator and swapping the pos and neg wires going to your coil.

IH changed the Cubs to 12 volts in mid 1964. They are negative ground.

A 6 volt generator and voltage regulator won't work on 12 volts. Cubs had 12 volt gens from mid 1964 - mid 1975. Then IH changed Cubs to alternators.
Many people on here that change to 12 volts use a 12 volt alternator, some alts use 1 wire to connect them. They are simpler to wire than a gen and voltage regulator.

Thanks for the replies. I did get the conversion kit so I will be removing generator and adding alternator along with the coil. Also I should be connecting it negative ground like a normal tractor. This positive ground is just too confusing for me. Also will be changing light bulbs to 12v
I just wanted to 100% when connecting ground to negative and positive to positive. Didn’t want to burn my coil or short out alternator.

I have done 3 12 volt change overs. I have used the smaller batteries that go in riding lawn mowers.
Read the directions that came with the kit, if there are any directions, and see if it says which ground it is.
I can't tell without being there if the alternator is positive or negative ground. It may say which ground it is stamped in the alt.
You could call and ask the people where you bought the kit, if you don't see that it tells which ground it is.
Got it from Steiner. Thanks for bringing helpful sir when you don’t have too. The goal is to work and restore the Cub with my daughter then give it ti her for her birthday. Hopefully my wife will take videos and pictures for memories for my daughter.
