154 leaking oil into the distributer

Continuation of the 154 engine surging thread. Pulled the distributer cap and about 2 Tablespoons full of oil ran out. This has accumulated since the spring tune up. What's the fix to stop the leaking oil?

Replace the oil seal on the governor where it fits into the block. Look on the Farmall Cub forum in the HOW TO forum for some suggestions. The topic is discussed quite frequently there. JMHO Stan

Didn't see your post until today. I pulled the distributor and replaced the O-ring at the drive end of the housing. Did notice that there was a rough/worn spot on the shaft that is close to the O-ring. Don't know if they align or not. Can you explain a little more about the governor seal?

I have not personally done this but there have been quite a few posts on this subject. I found this one by entering "replace leaking distributor oil seal" in the search box at the top right corner of this page. There's several threads there that you can review. Suggest you also review information about preserving the engine timing and how to reinstall the distributor/governor to not create other problems. Especially notice the info about the timing marks, the mark on the drive gear is not readily visible when the governor is removed and difficult to reinstall correctly. Probably most of the posts are about a Farmall/IH Cub but the process should be very similar or identical since the Number Series 154 etc. have the same C60 engine. Here's a link to the post. https://farmallcub.com/community/threads/oil-in-the-distributor.97447/ The service manual that covers the removal/service/repair/installation for the Cub (and a lot of other good info) is GSS 1012 and is available for viewing/downloading at the Resources link at the top of this page. Good Luck JMHO Stan

Thanks. I can handle the distributor timing. Just not sure how lube oil in the governor can get into the distributor except past the O-ring at the drive end of the distributor shaft.

the seal for the governor is bad, when replacing it needs to be set to the correct depth or new one will leak, when distributor is removed you can see the seal

Just replace the o ring and see how that works out. You can always go back and replace the seal also later. I was fairly confident the o ring alone would stop my oil leak in distributor. Wasn't the case but I did try.

Hi,
Below is a picture of the oil seal at the Battery Ignition unit drive, if you didn't look at the post Stan made above.
TM Tractor Parts sells a new oil seal, below is the listing.

Also, I put some electrical tap over the edge of the drive where the seal first makes contact with the drive, especially the two "slots". If you nick the seal in any way it will be a leaker. It took me a couple of seals before I finally got it right. The was many years ago. It till doesn't leak a drop of oil. Once you slide the seal in, you can remove the tape.
