154 engine sputtering, surging

Tune up this spring, everything working great. Now it's starting to sputter at random times like it's running out of fuel. Only lasts for a second or two. I've cleaned the sediment bowl and screen twice. Didn't help. Should I dive into the carb, and what should I look for?

Quick checks (if you have an IH carb) is the fuel inlet screen in the carb if it still has one. Also the main jet might need cleaning. Usually a flush with carb cleaner and blow it out with compressed air is sufficient. If the problem persists maybe look for a random misfire in the wiring/dist cap/plug connections, etc. When you done the tuneup did you adjust the valve clearance? JMHO Stan

carb jet getting hairs in it. only takes 1 to slow down the flow. rust from line can get in the carb and unless filter is directly on the carb the rust can get in. Use a neo line so you dont get rust from them ancient steel lines!
