I would like to buy a one row planter. Any suggestions on which ones are the better of the bunch? Like to be able to do corn and other seeds.

I have used a cole duplex for years. But I just finished getting my 172 runner together.They are getting hard to find.
Members will be posting there thoughts on planters soon :)
 
The Cole or Planet Jr. types seem to be popular for smaller area usage.---We have never used either one, so cant speak personally as to how good the work, but commercial users go for the Cole units and adapt them to a variety of mounts. thanks; sonny
 
Cole planters seem to be the top brand, if you have enough area to justify the cost. My experience is that they are hard to find used. They cost roughly $900+. I borrowed a JD 71 unit from a friend. Work very well for corn and beans. You can even get plates made for other large seeds. But carrotts ect will not work in them. If you have an average garden, the earthway planter does a respectable job. I rigged up my cc to pull two of them on its 3 pt hitch. They cost only around $100. and come with 6 different plates. Putting those behind a cub is like a 100 horse tractor with a 1 bottom plow..a little overkill..lol..But they have a handle to push them by hand too. Greg
 
How big of a garden??? The earthway is a good planter like said.I've used one and had great results.A cub planter is getting to be big $$$$$.Mine will be used this spring.I like the cub set up for fertilzer and cultivating.Planting also will be in a more straight line!!! :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:
 
I'd say you need two row planter.That is a lot more than I do.I used a earthway to plant 3/4 acre.Sweet corn of course.Still does not take to long.I think a two row planter would give you better results.May want to have fertilzer cans with it.I think a cub one row would be OK.2 to 4 acres,well get a 2 row.Just my thoughts.Kevin :shock: :shock:
 
Chad: 2 to 4 acres......that's alot of sweet corn. I imagine you are going to sell most of it. Great project. If you are planning on staggering the planting so it's not all ready at once, then a 1 row will do. You can do about 1/4 acre/hr. Stagger your plantings about 10 days apart. I think the earthway would be a little small for that much ground. You would be filling the seed box all the time. I think the planet jr would be too small also. Tell us more about this project. We'll help where needed.
Some friends and I planted sweet corn on April 24 last year hoping for it to be ready by July 4th weekend.. Missed it by 1 week..nuts.. Oh well, live and learn. The ground just wasn't quite right for earlier planting. We did sell all that was planted, just didn't get that premium price you get for the 4th. Good luck and tell us more . :D Greg
 
One row will work fine,--depending on how long you intend on spending using it.---It only takes a few mins. to plant an acre with a 2-row , so with a one row even doing 4 acres, it wont take all that long. thanks; sonny
 
Yeah I think a 1 row will be good enough. I enjoy working outside so time is not a issue. Now I just need to find one for my tractor!

I have an Allis Chalmers planter I would sell ya. Two row unit, fiberglass boxes, 3 point hitch setup. I can grab a pic if interested. Just a few miles north of bloomington/normal. Let me know.

I have tried a couple of different planters and have found planet jr. #300 to be as good as it can be.39 settings gives me the ability to plant any seed,sometimes the spacing is a little close, but I would rather cull some than try and reseed a bare spot.I had 2 earth way planters that worked good on large seeds but turnip and mustard would get caught between the disc and hopper,It was caused by a static charge between the seeds and two different plastics used in the unit.
I plant 6 acres field corn,6 acres greens,and 1 acre various veggy's all with the planet jr. This fall we are adding another unit to double drill!! and maybe a third.
You can pic up a good used one for about $350 on ebay,all parts are available through a local dealer,just google planet jr. to find one
 
The jang jphu and tdr planters should be considered. They space the seeds precisely. One row planters are adequate for up to ten acres unless you want to lay rows closer than 42". But the cub hydraulic system will overload if you try to lift two planet Jr on the back cultivator arms, already tried it.
