I have my daddy’s 1978 farmall 140 and it needs a starter. My mechanic passed away and I need help! I can’t find any number or anything on the actual starter and it’s not in my book either. Can anymore help me? Thank you for your time

Hi,
If the starter won't turn, the problem may not be the starter.
The battery cable connections can lose contact. They may need disconnecting, and the 4 ends cleaned with sandpaper. Wipe off all sanding with a clean rag. Disconnect the ground first, and connect it last, to avoid shorting the system.
The battery may need charging. Sometimes batteries get a bad cell, then they won't put out enough power to turn the starter.
Try using automotive jumper cables and connect directly to the starter, and see if it turns. Connect the ground cable last, at the end by the starter, away from the battery. Avoid making sparks near the battery.
If the starter is supposed to run when you turn the ignition key to the start position, it probably has a solenoid somewhere. Sometimes those quit, and the starter won't run.
They have said on here for the Cubs it's better to have the original starter checked and rebuilt at an automotive electrical repair shop. Probably good for a 140 starter too.
