Hydraulic pump question

Hey could someone please help me? Which way does the metal spring type of washer get installed in the hydraulic pump? I watched 2 videos on YouTube about it and both of them just plopped it in without saying a word about it!!!

I do not have first hand knowledge with this, but have read multiple accounts that the pump will not develop enough pressure to lift anything significant.
