Buying a 400

Postby ub54 » Thu Oct 05, 2017 7:50 am

Hi guys , I have a chance to buy a 400 at an auction in a week or so . I've never been on or around one . I do have a couple M that I use often and was wondering the differences ? And any idea how much it's worth in good running condition . I do know that some of them (maybe all) have the TA on them but I don't know anything about them . Pros and cons ? Any info is helpful , thanks.

Like a super M ,more hp, disc brakes, live pto, live hydraulics. Great tractors. We got one back in February. I love the smooth sheet metal styling.

Pros: It has many features of a modern tractor, including a 2-speed powershift auxiliary transmission (TA), live hydraulics, live PTO, and a rear hitch system that can be adapted to use modern 3pt implements.

Cons: It is a 62 year old tractor that has probably been used hard and put away wet more than once. While as rock-solid as they come when new, they are worn and literally anything could come apart on them catastrophically at any time. It will need more repairs and maintenance than a new compact tractor.

I know this is an old post, but I'm curious if you had bought the Farmall 400. I have a chance to buy one locally as well, but didn't know what they are worth either. Even if I decided to sell it, I would want to get my money back and anything over would be a bonus.

This one is straight, decent older paint, runs, and has a 2 point hitch. Needs carburetor cleaning and muffler according to owner. Unfortunately the guy doesn't have any attachments for it. He Wants $2,200.
