Re: Cub engines
They really got creative with space savings. Check out the alternator - They nestled it where the distributor usually goes. Where does that belt go? To the distributor driveshaft?
Where did the starter go? (It might be under that alternator, I just can't see that detail).

Re: Cub engines
looks like the alternator runs off the dist. drive and then the dist runs up front some how , the horse power rating and rpm range was pretty high in the marine engine 16-22 horses

Super cool, didn't know they were used in boats. I'd say these are somewhat rare correct?

Re: Cub engines
i've been looking for one off and on for several years , came close , price wasnt right . they are actually "somewhat" common . you just have to buy the sailboat to get the engine . i have been trying the sailboat forums , a lot of sailors who want to travel outside U.S. waters change out the palmer for a diesel engine . there are several things different from a standard cub engine , the wet exhaust is the most critical thing to check carefully when buying ( salt water and cast iron ). freshwater boats are best . they also have a water pump ( see if you can figure out where it is in the photo !!) coppersmythe ............... any leads will be handsomely compensated with a nice finders fee

Re: Cub engines
Have seen photos of the C-60 engine used on carnival rides. They were used on some IH farm machines.Jackman wrote:So what other things use a Cub or C-60 engine?
Pretty sure others will provide uses for the C-60 engine.

22 HP @ 3000 RPM? Other than a different cooling system and oil cooler allowing to it run hotter what did Palmer do to get the RPM & HP? What was the carb?

Re: Cub engines
Lighter governor weights would have handled the 3000 rpm, I have a combine engine in my loader tractor I have been working on that turned 2500 rpm before I backed it down some. The 22 HP would have been measured as engine HP, whereas the 10 to 11 HP we normally talk of was drawbar HP, with the associated power loos through transmission and final drive gears, and only at 1800 rpm.inairam wrote:22 HP @ 3000 RPM? Re: Cub engines
Horsepower is a math function. The C-60' engine's maximum torque is at 1600 rpms. Increase the RPMs and the HP goes up, but the torque goes down.
Horsepower is a selling/advertising point. Torque is the getter done/work point.

Re: Cub engines
So all of the HP is form an RPM increase and cooling to handle the increased RPM and not pistons/ cam / crank / carb

Old Marine Engine Discussion Board, Richard Day, Posted on Tuesday, June 10, 2003 - 06:50 pm:
For pratical purposes the M-60 and P-60 are the same engine. Basically they are the IHC CUB tractor block with Palmer water cooled exhaust manifold, and marine trim. The crankshaft is standard cub tractor but ground on the reverse gear end by IHC to mate with the Paragon OXKB reverse gear. If you rebuild use a Cub tractor block but save the marine crankshaft as it will bolt right up with IHC bearing inserts etc. Don't get confused with the Cub Cadet engine that is not what we are talking about. This is the standard CUB tractor engine and all the engine parts are available from IHC/Navistar dealers. Don't talk Palmer they will think you are nuts. Talk IHC Cub tractor. Forget the governor as it isn't needed in the marinized engine. Save all the marine trim. If you don't have a good exhaust manifold you are in deep trouble and they are very difficult to find. The head gasket must be copper if you run with salt water cooling. The standard tractor head gasket workes fine if you have a heat exchanger and fresh water cooling. You have been warned!!!!
