Is there a C60 engine exchange rebuilder

Postby markwayne » Wed Jul 29, 2015 11:47 am

I have noodled around in Google and I see plenty of engine parts sources. But not one that has an exchange program for the C60. There are Ag engine re-builders out there but none I have seen that list the smaller - older engines. Its not that I cant rebuild one and machine shops are available its most time and hassle. After rebuilding and modding many engines and transmissions over the years I have lost my enthusiasm. I would rather dabble in outboards these days.

So the question is: Do you guys know of a national outfit (kinda like Jasper) that exchanges the C60?

Years ago, Central Tractor (I hope the name is remembered correctly) offered essentially that service. But they have since been acquired by others and things have perhaps changed. Be aware that a slight majority of Cub engines are of the "old" design. If my block was of the newer design, no way would I trade it for whatever they happen to send to me as the rebuilt.
Engine improvements occurred at several points. but the most significant of the earlier improvements (my opinion, not necessarily shared by others) was at ENGINE serial number FCUBM 145830 for tractors, UCUBM 3174 for the U-1 unit and IMCUBM 21347 for Harvester-Thresher and Baler engines.
I much prefer engines of this style or those with even later improvements.

353 710 R96 for these engines.

For those trying to track the serial number relationship between the Tractors and the Engines, Cub tractor/chassis # 192113 (1956) was originally equipped with Engine #196900, a spread of 4787. One assumes that the spread widened as the production years continued.
#196900 and higher ENGINE serial is highly desirable, my opinion.

Thanks for the info...
Maybe I need to go back into the business. :? Taking in folks engines and rebuilding them.
I have two tractors. A 52 Cub that was rebuilt in the 70's and was used commercially by my grandfather till the early 80's and lighter by me and my father since then. That one runs great, likely it got the pop up pistons. The 2nd one I am going to do as a over the winter project is a Cub 185. So its the newer block.

Dad used it for many years till the engine was so weak it had to be parked. Now I have motivation to fix it and put it into occasional service. I will check into the outfit you mentioned. A friend knows of a small local machine shop and the manager is a Farmall fan so will be receptive of the little odd motor. Compared to what they usually do. So going through it myself might not be so bad.

I know you want a quick swap out but you'll be far happier spending the extra to have the engine overhauled by a good engine builder. Those core exchange programs can stick you with some junk.

Is Valu-bilt still around? I seem to recall they had a core exchange and listed the C60. It's my understanding that Valu-bilt is/was what was left of Central Tractor. They had a budding used/reman tractor parts business at one time.

Yes it looks like Value-built is still around. Now it looks like is just another seller of the same parts everyone else has, and nothing special about their prices judging from my quick look.
Its not that I can't rebuild it. The last engine project 3 years ago was twin 454 chevy engines for a big boat. Its just not a lot of fun anymore. But I may have to do it.

My Cub had the infamous crack in the front right corner...I bought it not knowing what to look for then. When I found out it was not recommended to fix it I called JP. John set me up with a short block C60 that included valves and camshaft installed. I did the rest. He even found a 1948 year code so it was as close as I could get. :)

Just my two cents.

To clarify my earlier post, years ago I had a conversation with JP when I was looking for components to rebuild my ’53 Cub. If I recall correctly, JP offered a replacement engine block, essentially a short block that he offered and would take your old block as a core. You would remove your governor, carb, intake etc. I don’t know if he still offers this or not but it is worth a check.

As a side note, I’ve purchase Cub parts from JP and never had a bad part or issue.

2010 Valu-Bilt tractor parts catalog. Cub with C-60 engine, casting number 251341.

Short block. $2467.53 Core charge is blank.
Long block. $2639.95 Core charge is blank.

I don't know if Valu-Bilt still handles Cub engines.

Opinion: Local machine shop or mechanic should be able to rebuild the engine for less money than the prices listed above. There is no way to estimate the rebuild cost until the engine is disassemble and measured. Just guessing, if you do the labor yourself, not including machining, if required, perhaps 1/4th to 1/2 the cost of the Valu-Bilt block.
I have an excuse. CRS.

It's a lot more now, almost $3500 for a rebuilt long block:

3500$??? I need to go into the business. One a week would be 1000$ profit at a reasonable markup. 50K would be a nice income for the time invested. :{_}:
