Important Announcement Re: Photo Host

Postby lildog » Sat Nov 01, 2014 3:33 pm

After much consideration, I have decided to shut down the photos.cubfest.com photo host next spring when my current hosting plan expires. When I started the host, there weren't many options for posting photos to this forum. Today, free and affordable cloud and photo storage is abundant and the forum itself supports images in new ways. On top of that, the costs of running the host have increased as has the effort to keep it running efficiently and securely, while use and financial support has decreased.

You have until March 31, 2015 to save any photos currently on the host that you'd like to save. After that date, you will not be able to access your photos, and existing links to photos on the host will no longer work.

Thank you to everyone who has helped support the photo host over the past 10 years. It would not have been possible to provide this service without the generous support of so many members, and I certainly enjoyed providing it. I apologize for any inconvenience this decision causes.

Completely understand, John. Thanks for your efforts in maintaining the host. :worthy:

Due to my marginal technical expertise I found Photobucket easier for me to use. It is free and requires no downsizing to upload to it. I highly recommend it.

Anybody moving their photos please remember, if your photos are linked to a "How To' they will be lost upon removal. It would help us if you will leave those posts until the deadline so we can do something to preserve them elsewhere and relink them. Otherwise your "How To' may be useless.

John, thanks for all the years and effort you have put into this. It has helped many members share their info.

Could someone explain how to determine which photos will go away? Will photos included in posts on this site be lost? There are many posts that include photos that have been and still are very helpful to me. If I could determine which ones were in jeopardy I could save copies of ones I might need. As you can see I do not understand how the system works.
Thanks.

John,I really appreciate what you have done for the forum by managing the host. Haven't added any pictures in the last year to the host as my phone and the host don't get along. I have many post linked to the host. Not sure how the best way to save them would be. I think I already have all pictures on host somewhere else. I have something like 7000 pictures in my computer with many duplicates and right now over 1700 in my phone. Been posting some to Facebook. I'll have to learn some new technology, lol

For those of you who are experienced Photobucket users, I have several questions...

I created an account and uploaded about 14-15 photos from the Cubfest Photohost. Now it won't let me upload any more. Is there a limit imposed on new users? If so, can you get the limit raised? Inquiring minds need to know. :D

John,

Thanks for all your time and effort devoted to the photohost. Very much appreciated.

In anticipation of the coming changes, I have been looking into another host site for my photos. Based upon Mr E's recommendation, I have been kicking the tires on SmugMug through their 14 day trial offer. I'm impressed! You no longer need to be a photo contortionist to post a pic to the forum. THANKS MR E!!!

Will Photobucket work with my obsolete Microsoft XP or does it require a newer version? I know, I need to upgrade.....

I was using it with XP until a year or two ago when I upgraded. Not a problem.

Does Smug Mug and Photo Bucket charge for their service?

From day one when I joined this forum, I was not smart enough to use PhotoHost. So, I have since been using Photobucket with no problems.

That being said, I am always looking for a better way to attach pics to a topic. The way I do it now is log on to Photobucket and select one of my folders. I then browse and find the pics to be uploaded. Then select all that I want to upload using the Control key. After the upload is complete, I then open the new topic or reply and Photobucket at the same time. I copy the URL one at a time to attach to the topic. After all pics are attached, I preview to see if everything worked.

Question, is this the fastest method? Can more than one pics be copied from Photobucket and pasted into the topic at the same time? Or can you only do one at a time by toggling back and forth until all pics are attached?

Just saw your question, Bill. No charge for me at Photobucket. Maybe if your files exceed a certain limit, there could be a charge. I don't know.

You don't even need a photo hosting program if you have the pic on your computer. Just click the Upload attachment tab below the submit button.
