Possible 108 Purchase
I may go look at this 108. The original 10 hp has been replaced by a 12 hp Kohler per the seller. I usually have narrow frames, so this might be a departure for me in that regard. Price seems good. The seller said it hasn't run in a year, so possible fuel related issues might be present.

Re: Possible 108 Purchase
I'm going to go look at it Saturday. I would have last night, but he got home too late for me to go look at it and then get home (I get up at 3 am to go to work). I kind of wish it was a 104 since I had a lot of those when I had Cub Cadets a few years ago.

Re: Possible 108 Purchase
Every used cc needed a head gasket. That’s a new replacement 12hp. I have two cc with a replacement engine.one 70cc with a 8hp and a 122 with a 12hp. My 104 cc with the orginal engine still has the honing marks in the bore.

Re: Possible 108 Purchase
I didn't go look at this 108 like I was planning. Basically, another one came up on my radar that's I would rather have. A 100 with a 42 inch front blade. I'm going to try and go look at it this evening.
Ad says it runs, but will need a "car" battery. One thing I noticed is the rear tires are backwards, so that's got me wondering about the owner's knowledge on tractors in general, plus maintenance, etc. She had it listed as a 1960, which we know isn't correct. The 100 was made from 1963 to 1965, and IH didn't make their first L&G tractor until 1961.

One problem with that one is it's sitting outside and the muffler is pointing upward.

Re: Possible 108 Purchase
It looks like it has great potential if you can buy it right. I think the 100 is a much better looking Cadet than the 108, but then I am partial to them since a 100 was my first Cub Cadet
Good luck,
Good luck,
David

The 70 & 100 cc were my first cadets too. The 122 was next, Then 108 came next. The wide frame is a comfortable mower. I like them all.

Re: Possible 108 Purchase
Thanks, guys.
I brought the 100 home last night. I got it for half the asking price, but it does have some issues. They said it last ran last year to move snow. Ad said it needed a "car" battery, but the cable ends are regular L&G battery type. I was concerned about the muffler pointing up and being left outside, but he said it was always covered with a tarp. I checked the oil and it looked fine, and not too dirty. He said it needed a coil, but it may be points, condenser, etc.
It wouldn't start nor even crank over. Maybe the starter/generator froze up, but I have to suspect the worst - seized engine? But it could be something a lot less serious or expensive.
It came with the front blade and the original operator's manual for the tractor. He said it had a deck, but it was shot. It was their dads tractor and from what I gather their dad bought it new. I pointed out the ags being on backwards, and they said that's the way it's always been. He said I wasn't the first to point that out either.
It's home, but I haven't had the time to take it off the trailer yet. It was dark when I got home and I had to get up at 3 this morning.

Belts can stick into the pullies. Remove the s/g clean the armature and check the brushes. Clean the carb and points. Change the headgasket, seen stuck valves before.

Re: Possible 108 Purchase
Good news and bad news. I loosen the belt to the S/G to see which was locked up, the S/G or the engine. It was the engine....I pulled the plug and it isn't looking too good. I see rust on top of the piston and the plug was weird looking. All I had was a bit of motor oil, so I put a little straight through the plug hole and the engine turned just a tiny bit. I will get something a bit stronger, maybe transmission fluid, and pour a bit of that in and let it sit for a spell. Good news, the S/G isn't seized up. So, there's that.
I took some pictures before I got it off the trailer. It still has the original dealers tag on it. I haven't check the serial number yet to see what year it is.

Re: Possible 108 Purchase
Pull the head and start soaking the piston and valves. Now the fun begins.
Upon purchasing my 70cc & 100cc from my coworker the 70 had a new 8hp replacement Kohler and he said the 100 had a new engine too. The 100 had a heck of a knock in it. I found out the s/g had a bad rear bearing(bushing).

Re: Possible 108 Purchase
Thanks, Bill. I got the engine freed up with a mixture of transmission fluid and acetone. I will drain all of that stuff out and then refill with oil and see if it will crank with the S/G. If it does, then I'll check for spark. It seems to have good compression when I was turning it by hand after freeing it up. I guess the key word there is "seems".

Re: Possible 108 Purchase
Congrats by finding a really straight 108. I would listen to BigBill and others about removing the head to prevent damage. Good compression may be a sludge mixture of rust and oil. This doesn't drain out. It is an abrasive mix which will ruin a good engine. I know it is a pain but there are all sorts of things under that head that you can't see now. That rust slurry will foul your plug -and that is a good thing. There is so much crap which could be scraped out, evacuated, that will clog everything down the line. I made similar mistake. You get one shot at this situation.
