The gas truck managed to squeeze us in for this evening. Time to fill all the gas tractors up in case I need to drain them for the generator.

Prayers for all who are in the path of the storm, and praying that it either weakens or turns out onto the ocean.

I have never been through a hurricane, and don't want to, but I have been either in or close to a tornado or two. At least with a hurricane there is plenty of warning time, though it ain't much comfort when you have to deal with the aftermath.

For those who have to deal with this storm, stay safe and get to a higher and safer place and don't try to ride it out. Take the warning as a time and opportunity to get out of harm's way.

Imagine a low grade tornado that lasts several hours. That's as close to I know how to describe what it's like. Last report I saw said we might have hurricane force winds as long as 17-18 hours.

The warning time is some of the worst about a hurricane. The media becomes saturated with it, plus the local yokels down at the Piggly Wiggly talking about how it's going to be a category 8 with 900 mile an hour winds and a 350' storm surge, and people actually believe them. A tornado comes and then it's over.

Hurricane fran was terrifying but we got though. (It hit at night.) Floyd in '99 wasn't quite so bad but miserable afterward with flooding. Both were about a week and a half--two week stretch without power. Sounds like this one might be a combo of the two.

Everyone's continued prayers would be much appreciated.

Al's description of the advance warning reminds me of snow storm coverage here. (I'll take the snow though). I hadn't paid much attention until I heard a NPR reporter talking to a lady from Swansboro this afternoon on the radio. Our oldest son lives in Newport so it started getting personal all of a sudden. Lets hope it does a U-turn and heads back out to sea! John

Oh yeah, snow all day every day. The media coverage for those kinds of events gets crazy too, and everybody tries to buy all the bread and milk. But you don't have to worry about your roof blowing off.

Onslow County was placed under mandatory evacuation today. The traffic has been bumper to bumper down NC 24/US 258 all day. We're still planning to stay put. A neighbor said his son had looked at leaving but the closest hotel reservation he could make was in Nashville, TN.

Al, you guys are still welcome here...you could even bring Old Ugly! Lots of room here and out at our farm. Last track I saw moved the centerline just a tad south of us now...at least we shouldn't have the surge.

Thanks, Dale. I am a little more encouraged since the forecast track as of tonight doesn't have it going right over us anymore. Our neighbor is also the emergency management director for Onslow County. When you drive by on the way to school and his family is loading up to leave, it does make you nervous! My parents live just across the Duplin Co. line and are getting up in age. I want to try to stay close by so I can help with whatever needs straightening out at the farm once the weather improves.

We left the farm (Lake City SC) to come back to our house near Greenville SC in order to escape the worst of the hurricane. Now with the latest track we may actually get more rain and flooding up here! Hard to know where to go, except to leave the state entirely! I did go put some more screws in the edge of my sheds tin roof yesterday at the farm, and put the patio furniture where I thought it might stand a chance of not getting blown to Georgia. Everybody in the path (which was about 350 miles wide at last count) stay hunkered down until its over.

The kids and I went out yesterday evening and we stopped at Tractor Supply to get a new rain cap for the muffler on the 4630 I broke off the other day. We got to the checkout and the cashier was on the phone with a customer. I could sense her frustration with the storm and having to deal with the public. She said "we don't have anymore generators, no, I'm not sure when we sold the last one, I just came to work not long ago". She hung up and looked at me and said "what difference does it make when we sold the last one, WE DON'T HAVE ANY". I started laughing and said it's like having something for sale and selling it and people call and ask when you sold it, how much you sold it for, etc.

Al (and anyone else in the area), how is it there in Jacksonville? You guys certainly go to extremes to get in the news! Something like 30-40" of rain, with 7" more through Tuesday! Yikes! :(

Let us know you are OK.

My aunt in north myrtle beach text me Friday morning around 11 and said power just went out. She text me yesterday afternoon at 2 and said power just came back on. I text her today and ask if she was okay and power on and any flooding, she said power was on and no flooding at her house. Prayers for everyone who is without power and experiencing flooding. We are getting rain right now, dumped 2 1/2” out already today and supposed to rain all night and day tomorrow. Wind isn’t bad here though, it has been some and the yard has some limbs in it but not bad. God is good, all the time!
