Little advice

Postby Wilbilly » Thu Jun 14, 2018 7:00 pm

I think i know the answers but i still want to ask. I found i believe is a cub cadet original. It looks in pretty good shape but is not running. I could spin the engine by hand and dosnt feel like it has a lot of compression. But the guy just want 150 for it wich sounds like a steal to me but im not sure on the market. Any help will be appreciated . Thanks Wil

Could have a broke connecting rod or a stuck valve. Check the front of the block for a hole. Look down spark plug hole and see if you can see the piston moving. I’m not even sure you would be able to do that but you may.

There's not much compression on those 7 hp Kohlers, it may be fine. I like the Originals, crude but a cool little tractor. I think they made about 65,000 and there are still many around.

OK, over a brief few months, I got, for free, many parts for an Original. The only things missing were tires, rims, frame and engine. The engine he sold for ~$150 and the buyer drove 3 or 4 hours one-way to pick it up. So, $150, for a complete Original sounds good to me. Oh, a good friend of mine, knee deep in CCs, is now the proud owner of all those goodies (for exactly what I paid for the stuff). :) :)

Those are great machines, built like a tank, basically the same transmission as the "full size" Cubs. Without seeing it, a value is a little hard to determine, but in reasonable condition I think it's worth his asking price.
Creeper gears, lights, fenders, etc. add to the value. I have bought a few that I was thinking would be "parts tractors". A little fooling with them and they ran, so it could be a simple fix. Even if you have to rebuild the engine, a little work and $$ and you will have a great garden tractor that should last another 60 years

A good friend of mine gave me a bunch of CC O parts, knowing I was knee deep in those little gem's. I have an extra engine, so I may have to assemble the parts and throw it in...

Good luck,
David

Here's a $100 "parts tractor", replaced the head gasket, rebuilt the carb, a few seals and some paint
