with #1 pison at TDC should the rotor be pointing at the 2:00 position with a distibutor ?

The technical information can be found in GSS 1012 Electrical Equipment. Keep in mind that unlike a magneto, a distributor can be "timed" by adjusting the shaft position where it enters the distributor. Thus the rotor can be set to fire #1 at any of the positions so when it was last assembled, the rotor may or may not be at 2:00.

Simple answer is it should be lined up with the terminal for the #1 plug wire. Mark where distributor cap #1 terminal is on distributor, and it should be pointed at this spot.

Hi,
Below is a page from the 1955 Cub owner's manual showing the Battery Ignition unit.
They were originally assembled with the number one cylinder terminal for the ignition wire at about the 2 o clock position. The connector for the coil wire faces straight to the right.

The pic on the left shows the position. The page also shows working on the points. :)
