Need Super A "Expert"!

I have pretty much run out of patience with my Super A right now. It had started sputtering if you advanced the throttle, so I thought it was a fuel issue. Took the carb apart and cleaned it, the sediment bowl and drained the tank. I seemed to have good fuel flow to/through the carb. Reassembled and the same problem. After cleaning the carb again, swapping out carbs, then finally mounting a new carb, I called a friend to come over. First thing he wanted to do was...clean the carb! He did...same problem. He installed the other carbs, after cleaning them, and we did seem to get it to throttle up. Let it run a while, periodically advancing the throttle, and it was OK. So he left.

I shut the tractor down, ate lunch, came back out and started it up, backed it out of the shed, and as soon as I advanced the throttle...YEP! It started the same sputtering! So I am mostly just tired of looking at it!

Didn't check timing, compression, or spark. Now I just don't feel like it!! Time for a mini fest!!!

Anyone in the Chapel Hill area who is interested in helping me? The old guy who used to help us when we got our first cub, has since passed away, so I don't know anyone to call. I'm willing to pay reasonable rates!!

Clean as a whistle, but IF I have to look at that beast again, I will double check those, the wire order, and the points.

Dale, if you get the A to run, spray a little starting fluid, contact cleaner or some other flammable liquid around the intake manifold. If there is an air/vacuum leak the rpms will increase. It's something thats quick and easy to do and can rule out an air leak...

That does sound inviting . The reason i mentioned the plugs is my 67 has done that, they looked good but changed them and it fixed it.

Could also be burned[points or even a coil, I have had both of them mimic fuel problems.

OK...I'll do a LITTLE bit more, if no one is going to take pity on a poor damsel in distress!!

I should have a new set of points and a condensor arriving tomorrow, so this weekend I will change plugs and check wire order, and swap out points and condensor. I think I have another coil around, too, but I will change one thing at a time. I sure wish there were a cubfest nearby this weekend!!

Let me know if anyone really wants to take over!

Check to make sure that the throttle/governor linkage is not bound up, loose, or rubbing against anything. I'm not as familiar with the Super A, but I know this is a REALLY common problem on the Cubs, and they have the exact same symptoms. On the Cub, the throttle linkage runs really close to the front of the block, where it attaches to the governor arm, and I've seen the linkage bent, rubbing the block, and I've had more than one that just has a bit of crud built up between the linkage and block, allowing it to rub. The rubbing just slows the governor response, and the result is the surging. Like I said, I'm not as familiar with the Super A, but it's worth a check. Sounds like you've been through the fuel system pretty good!

No, haven't had the chance...but I did sell my spare rebuilt Touch Control Block today!!

So now I have some money to pay someone IF I could find someone. But, I am feeling the challenge from you guys, so plan to concentrate on it at least one more time. (I now have a new set of points and condenser.) The sad thing is that this sort of challenge is so much more fun when you have other folks around to work with. It's boring and frustrating by myself!

I hear ya! I don't have anyone other than my nephew and he's as dumb as me when it comes to tractors.

Today, we discovered my Super C engine is stuck. So my list of problems just keeps piling up.

The county man that grades our road wants to buy it. I would hate to sell it, but I'm pretty ticked off right now. Problems keep piling up.

I checked craigslist, but most of what I see for sale looks like they've been road hard and put away wet.

Don't write off a stuck engine as a "gone" engine. More details and why it is stuck might make it easier and more inviting to get going again. You know an engine that is "dry stuck" from sitting isn't hard at all to get going again....usually.
