I just got a good deal on a used tire (for my 340) that has brand new tread, but has been sitting outdoors on a tractor for probably a good number of years. The sidewall of the surface that was toward the tractor is pretty green - looks like an algae or mossy green - I figure it was away from the sun and just grew some sort of biological coating. Is there any reason I can't just clean it with Clorox, the same way you clean vinyl siding?
Any other suggestions for cleaning up tires to restore their blackness?

This may not be the best, but I've had good luck using oven cleaner and a pressure washer to clean (the algae from) the tires before painting them with the paint from Miller Tire.

Thanks for the idea - As you suggested I used oven cleaner on the tire and cleaned it off with a pressure washer - and the tire looks like new. Worked great!

You're sure right there Country! We enjoy restoring these old tractors so much, but when you want to use them as well, as I do, it's such a difficult balance. Like when something drops onto your brand new paint and chips it down to the metal! Ouch.
