Circa 1938 Craftsman Tool Box Restoration

Got a project that you are working on that is not a tractor? Maybe a barn to hold your tractors or just fun stuff like woodworking, glass, tools, sheds, gardens, custom implements, etc., this is the place to talk about it.

Man that is big money for 1949! No wonder your mom remembers it so vividly!

Irresponsible Speculation Ahead - It was probably a major fight that day in the household for spending the grocery money!
Years later being ticked off at it, your mom  painted it teal so your dad would have to carry it around and look rediculous!
The magic barn has uncovered the secret family fued.

All joking aside Ken, I love reading about your projects and the sharing of your family. We are blessed to have you here.

Scrivet - thanks for this. So interesting - I'll check it out, I think my mom is a member of ancestry.com so I'll have a look. The only difference in this photo is the latch on the clam shell doors. Fascinated with $6.75 - I'd buy a hundred of them. Now if the picture was just in color :D :D

:D :D $6.75 plus the full set of tools which we still have - In the 70 years my parents have been married - I'm sure this was not the only feud over what Dad purchased - Saw Mill, balers, she hated his 67 green Chevy Belair, tractors and his collection of what she calls JUNK......It's fun to watch someday's yet.....Thanks four kind words - Ken

I've solved several of my own mysteries with that Sears catalog I bought. :D Now I'm going to be spending way to much time looking at all the years.

I should have mentioned the link is

ancestry.com/sears

on the right side of the page pick a year in the drop down box (1896-1993)
then pick a season, then click on the catalog number.

Scrivet - you have NO Idea - How much I want it IH Red. As others have pointed out - who am I doing this for? I'd like to dedicate the box to tools specifically sized for the Farmall Tractors I have - then the restoration side of me kicks in. I'll leave it as primer till I decide.

The tote tray may have been red? Check out the bottom photos:

My oldest brother was up from Delaware - he was at home until 1962 when he went into the US Air Force. He looked at my restoration effort on this tool box - stating this is just how I recall it. In any event - it's machine gray now - not rusting away.

I'm now on the hunt for the correct rivets to put one handle on and the logo back on.

Re: Finished Project. Circa 1938 Craftsman Tool Box Restorat

Postby PVF1799 » Sun May 11, 2014 11:52 am

A Finished Project

I had to use body filler and lots of TLC to get this ready to give back to my Dad. After the rust was removed in the cabinet - there were lots of perforations from the mouse nests that had been living in there for who knows how long.

I'm gonna gift it to him for Father's Day. I'm going to take his original tools that came in that box, back in there and give it to him then. :D :D
