coil replacement

Just wondering how much of a hassle is it to replace the coil (not external like on later models) on a 1950 cub.

Just wondering how much of a hassle is it to replace the coil (not external like on later models) on a 1950 cub.

The magneto has to be removed, the coil cover taken off, the 2 screws holding the coil in place removed. The point cover has to be removed, and the wire going from the coil to the bolt on the side of the magneto removed. Then remove the core from the old coil and install it in the new one. It does take a little persuasion, so be careful you do not damage the new coil. Reassemble, making sure the terminal on the wire does not ground against the case when reconnecting the wire by the points. this is also a good time to replace the points and condenser. If you removed the rotor, be sure to retime it, finally reinstall and time the magneto.

I don't have any Cubs with a magneto but I do have a power unit and a Farmall H with magnetos. I call them Humpty and Dumpty because if I made them look like that picture...... well you know the story.
