154 mower settling

Postby Andrew Z » Sun Apr 27, 2014 6:39 pm

I have a 154 w a mower and 3 pt. when mowing the deck slowly leaks down over a few mins of operation. If I switch to the 3 pt it will stay up so I assume the selector valve is tight. Is ther a way to service the main control valve under the dash, seals and such or... This tractor has sat over 5 years as well.

Thanks
Andrew

You can get seals for the valve under the dash. I just replaced mine and got them from a hydraulic repair shop.

Ray would you know if the external valve relief is resealable? I have the 'h' style valve.

Thanks

This is the valve I have. It has one o-ring within it, and one o-ring outside of the working parts.

If your lift is leaking down, then I'd look specifically to the o-rings with the valve housing (part 11) as the culprit.

Does this look like the right part number for the seal kit? I got it off Messicks site 474842R93

thanks

That number appears to be right, but I bought all my o-rings piecemeal from a hydraulic repair shop.
Looking at Messicks, it appears they want $57.13 for the kit (0 in stock as well)? I paid just a fraction of that at the repair shop, for the o-rings within the valve and for the cylinder itself.

Just curious, is the mower settling while you're mowing, or just doing it over night when the tractor is off? If it is doing this while mowing, then you should adjust the depth stop on the rockshaft to where you want to mow. The mower should not be "hanging" from the rockshaft while mowing, as there's no way to set it the same every time unless you have the depth stop adjusted properly. You can see the bolt in this photo of my 184, the vertical, galvanized 3/4" bolt just above the rockshaft. That's the depth stop bolt.

Right, I got the gauge set, its when lifting and going from one section of the lawn to the other or when not in use it settles down. I think I may get another valve at this point

You may have two valves involved with this tractor, the control valve and a separate pressure relief valve.

I would disassemble the valve(s) and replace the seals/O-rings. This will be much cheaper than purchasing a complete assembly. Generally hydraulic control valves are relatively simple and straight forward to repair.

Frequently the o-rings are of a standard size and available at most tractor dealerships or well stocked hardware stores.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I have the same problem I haven't addressed yet both my mower and 3or leaks down at the same time. I figure it's the selector valve. I purchased a bag of the square o rings from McMaster Carr. My first problem is my electrical system. I parked my equipment in a damp shaded area. It ate the wire connections in my jeep tractor by rusting. I figure it did in my 154 connections too.
I fixed the pto which is cake to work on. Thanks to hamiltonbobscubs without him I'd be in trouble.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.
