Cub Lo Boy 154 engine overhaul
Hi, I have owned my 154 for a few years now and I have decided to completely overhaul the engine and restore its power. Does anyone have a suggestion on where to buy an engine overhaul kit that has good quality parts and for a reasonable price? Thanks from your time! -Nick

I obtain my Cub engine parts from the local auto parts store. Check with the advertisers on this board.
Again, before you purchase any parts - - - disassemble the engine, clean, inspect, and measure all parts.
Cub engines are not sleeved - so there is a good chance any kit you purchase will not match your engine.

If your engine has much wear it will need to be bored, which is not something the average home/shade tree mechanic has either the tools or training to do. I suggest talking to some of the local automotive machine shops and see what they will charge if you take the engine to them. We are in a rural area, and have a machine shop nearby that if you take then an engien with the pan, valve covers removed, etc. They will do the rest of the tear down, bore reinstall pistons, turn the crank, grind valves and replace as needed, for approx. $600 including all parts and a gasket set. Which is a bargain, most places charge much more

Re: Cub Lo Boy 154 engine overhaul
The numbered Cubs are or were primarily mower tractors. Operated at maximum engine RPMs, not lugging the engine.
If you own some engine overhaul tools, suggest dismantling and measuring the engine parts yourself. Probably find the cylinder bores and crankshaft are still in good condition and within specifications.
If you don't own the tools, cheaper to have a machine shop do the work than to purchase the tools.

Brother's place of employment will or should have the best price for parts.
If you are using the employer's machines and tools, buy parts from the employer.

Re: Cub Lo Boy 154 engine overhaul
Before you go through all the trouble to overhaul the engine, you might just want to a little more diagnostics and see if it really needs it. I've never actually had one that "needed" an overhaul. The biggest problem is the valves getting out of adjustment and not letting the engine build enough compression. Also, if it wasn't used for mowing, they can get a lot of carbon built up in the head of the engine.
Is it using oil, does it have a lot of blow by, or is it running really poorly? I'd look at these things first way before an overhaul. If it's not burning oil or doesn't have a lot of oil blow by, chances are it's fine and just needs a good tune up and valve adjustment. You can do that for about $50 and a couple of hours of your labor.

It's got lots of blow by and is fairly heavy on the oil consumption. It really rolls the smoke out of the dipstick breather. We took the head off and it's all oily. It's pretty obvious it needs the rebuild

Re: Cub Lo Boy 154 engine overhaul
by your description you need to figure on boring and new pistons. Probably needs crank turned and new bearings, in addition to vlave job. do not buy parts except for gasket kit until everything is checked and measured by a machine shop.
