I meant that the grit doesn't work, not the blower. Black diamond seems to break down, quickly, ok for single use, outdoors, but doesn't do that well, recycled.

As Gary said, it depends on what you want to clean. First time I wanted to get serious on some rusty cast iron, I went to a local shop intending to get some silicon carbide. The guy there talked me into aluminum oxide. I've been pretty happy with that choice. I have also used a mixture of glass beads and crushed glass which works pretty well on softer materials. Since I have had the aluminum oxide, I think I have only emptied the blaster to change back to glass one time.

I don't think glass media has the same risk as sand, due to the physical difference in the materials. I exhaust my cabinet fan outside and don't worry much about it. Maybe I should.

Edit to add;
TP has a pretty good description of each medium they sell:

I currently use Skat-Blast from TP Tools. It works well on wheels, steps sheet metal and such Here is how it is described on their website:
"Environmentally-safe. Made of recycled auto and other clear glass products, it is crushed by a roller-type mechanism to a consistency of 40-80 mesh. Made in USA.

Similar in appearance to Glass Beads, except edges are sharper and in different shapes. These edges cut faster than glass beads, giving a medium texture to the blasted metal. Because paint and rust removal is fast, slightly more dust is present; but the results are FANTASTIC! Grit Size 40-80, white color."

However it is $29.00 a box plus $19.00 shipping per box.

I have found (so far) two bulk suppliers within 30 miles of me. I will be checking with them soon to get bulk pricing.

Yes Jim, that is one of the places. It happens to be on the same route we take to a favorite restaurant. If Rosie finds out I may have to buy her lunch. :lol:

Actually, Rosie likes the place too. So if she found out I was going to be near the restaurant I better take her along. I used to eat lunch there once a week when I was working down the street. Now it's whenever we are over that way.

Anyway, I called the place and they have a 40-70 mesh crushed glass similar to what I am now using at $22.50 per 50 pound box. That's $7.50 cheaper than TP plus the shipping savings. I guess, with the money I would save, I would break even after figuring in gas and Rosie's lunch.

I looked into aluminum oxide at another supplier. It lasts 5 to 6 times longer and is only twice the price at $45.00 a 50 pound box. The down side is it will wear the nozzle, gun, pick up tube and even vac motor more quickly.

Bill, use one of the blowers, from the dead dryers, you mentioned. Squirrel cage blower, adjacent to the motor. Dust doesn't pass through the motor, like a shop vac. Moves much more air, than a shop vac, too.

This stuff looks good. http://www.tptools.com/First-Choice-Abr ... l?b=d*8019 , of course they have lots to choose from. I could possibly be persuaded to pick some up and bring it to the bash, I drive near this place about once a month. Shipping is over half the price of a 50lb bag of "First Choice" and "Skat Magic" from TPTools.

Thanks Ray, that is what I am currently using. I am trying to find something compatible (but more economical) that may be sold closer to me.

Thanks for your offer to pick it up also.
