Broken left brake ,rod and connection to shoe still good..must have broken the mount on the other end of the shoe. Do I have to separate in the middle? ? Where do I start ?Thanks for any input.

do you have single or double brakes. To work on the brake you may have to remove the final drive unit only.

Crawl under the tractor with a light. Determine what went wrong - broke. May be a simple fix or as Dirtbuggy suggests, you might wind up removing the final drive.

If you do not have them, you need the service and parts manual for the tractor.

Have owned this low boy and manuals since '84. I know I have to get into the final drive to fix the pin that holds the hidden end of the brake shoe. The frame rail is bolted over the final drive, or is it studs, or are there guide pins? If there isn't a way to lower the final drive straight down , without first coming away from center section , I may have to split it. A lot of work for a broken brake pin? lots of layers of paint n dirt.will get a closer look Tomorrow. Been down under with a light first thing looking for that easey fix. No such luck!

Ouch. Split is in store. Kinda a pain in the butt. Service manual also says, split.

I have only split my 154, once. Took me 2 days, part time, couple hours a day, working by myself and $6 and change to repair the creeper problem. And then, while I had it split I checked the brake bands, finals for leaks, etc.. Figured one split was enough.

I doubt you will have to split the tractor just to change brake bands or associated hardware. Just remove a tire and final drive.
There are guide pins on the finals. The finals can be removed without removing the frame. About 3-4 of bolts go through the final and frame. Those are slow removing with a box end wrench. The others go quickly.

In order to remove the final, you'll have remove the whole rear end from the frame as the final sits inside the frame.

I was studying the tractor yesterday and decided a split is necessary because of the frame issue. I've always had a ticking when using creeper so I'll also be looking into that. What's my best source for brake parts,seals, creeper gears. Thanks in advance for all of your advice!

A lot of the parts are standard. Depending on the problem/parts needed, hardware store for small parts and auto parts store for seals.
