Wanted one of these for a long time: MF combine

Postby Super A » Sun Dec 22, 2013 10:49 am

This was my graduation gift to myself.

It's a 1960 model Massey Ferguson 35 combine. Continental 140 engine, 8' cut, variable speed belt drive. I think it may have been the smallest commercially produced combine for the US market. Engine is free and I don't think it will take too much to make it run. I've wanted one of these for years, it's sort of the Farmall Cub of self propelled combines.

Believe it or not, you could get a 2 row corn head for this. I expect it would be a slow go....

Cosmetically it's ugly but it's straight. Biggest thing it needs appearance-wise is the correct rear wheels and rims. Steering is pretty loose but I think that's a reasonably easy fix.

Got to build some shed space, pronto!

Pretty slick, Al. A guy near me uses an old Massey to cut his corn and beans. I'll have to check what model it is. Maybe even take a photo. :D

Used to be lots of 300s, 410s and 510s in my neighborhood. I grew up around two 300s. A small combine by today's standards but it was a GIANT compared to a 35!

I think it would be a blast running that combine. I'm sure you will have fun with it.

Arrgh!!! It's an Allis. I could have sworn it was a Massey. Oh, well. Here it is anyway. An oldie, but goodie. There is also a guy in the area that harvests corn with a Farmall M mounted picker. I need to get some video of that!

An L2! We had the next smaller one, a M2, after the last 300 MF left. The harvesting is all hired out now.

That "orange" corn head has about a mile of roller chain under it. Later "black" heads had gearboxes and much more user-friendly.

I think it looks pretty good for a 60+ year old machine. Another small combine was the MM Uni Harvester but I think it may have been a 10 foot. It also could run 2 rows of corn. Might be interesting if your steering is loose to try and harvest corn. Get her going. We want pictures. In the field. Vern :applause:

Great looking machine. I love the old and less common machinery, the stuff you don't see a whole row of at the show. I bet it's real fun to run when the winds comming from the right direction! (Yes, you can take that two ways) :D :(

A 35 Massey is a sweet little unit.They are fun just to drive. We hauled mine on a small Dodge Roll-off.(The wheel base is so tight.)
If it has just Massey Harris stickers on it, it is pre 1957. If it has both Massey and M.Ferguson stickers that is the time of change over 1957-8
IHC made a quality machine and was leader of the pack.Let's keep them running,

According to the serial number data I have been able to find, (compared to what's out there on MF combines, I realize I am spoiled being an IH guy!!) mine is a '60 model. It has Massey Harris and Massey Ferguson decals on it.

Massey combines were real popular around my neighborhood in the 60s and 70s. As a kid growing up in the late 70s and early 80s, EVERYBODY had a Culti-Vision Farmall (Cub, Super A, 100, 130, 140) and a MF combine. By the time the 540 and 550 MF's came out (540 was a really updated 300 and 550 was a really updated 510) folks were starting to realize that the MF's couldn't hold a candle to a JD, Gleaner, or Axial Flow IH. The last new MF combine I saw on the local dealer's lot was in '85 or '86 and it sat there a while before anyone bought it.

This is the serial number list another collector sent me. AFAIK it is accurate. My machine falls in the middle of 1960.

1958= 91500001
1959= 91500405
1960= 91503306
1961= NA
1962= 91506506
1963= 12446981

It has Massey Harris everywhere except the back which has a MF emblem. The serial tag does say Massey Ferguson. Even the ignition key says <M-H-F> on it.

I have to go back and read some more but I think they just kept using the Massey Harris decals until they were gone.

One local fellow had a Massey combine with Chrysler industrial engine. Struck out finding engine parts anywhere. So he asked an oldtimer (me) to take a look and advise. Told him to ask for parts for a 1954 Plymouth. And that was correct. 1954 Plymouth had just one engine, no options, so the parts guy could not get confused.

Was it a Chrysler "leaning tower of power? Our first 300 had a Chrysler slant 6. That machine burned up in the field. The one that replaced it had the perkins diesel.
