Re: How many times have you thought a SA/100/140 over a Cub?
I have some Cubs I mow with, I enjoy mowing with them and just playing around with them.
A couple of SA setting around and 100 HC that I use to cultivate with, and like Boss I have a Ford 3600 that I like to use.
But if I had to just keep one and pick between a Cub and SA-140 I think I would go with SA-140 for what was said before, HP, PTO and Hyd.
But I think the right answer is one or more of each .

Re: How many times have you thought a SA/100/140 over a Cub?
Well i have both a Cub an a 140 both 1964 models which is nice! the Cub is so much more comfortable to use an ride and just the right size an weight to to cut a little over an Acre yard an mow without leaving deep tire marks pretty much a cub is perfect for mowing cheaper an tougher than a riding mower!
But for the 140 perfect tractor for a large garden say an acre right size for a SA-140. and the 140 you can add a 3 point hitch to it with no problems, good on fuel both 140 an Cub. and if i had close to 7 acres the 140 with a Woods 59 inch rear mounted fast hitch mower would work perfect for mowing and use the cub around the house. but pretty much having both no matter what model SA,100,130,140,Cub having two for many acres is just right! i choose both!

Re: How many times have you thought a SA/100/140 over a Cub?
Here's my 2 cents. A good running Cub and well maintained implements are really a marvel of engineering. Simple, elegant, and does a great job at the tasks for which it was designed, and a real joy to operate. That being said, I agree a 540 PTO and I think a 3 point hitch would have been a great additions/upgrades. Those upgrades however would, in many cases, demand more of the tractor than it was designed for, especially the low powered C60 engine. I do run a Woods 59 deck on a 49 F Cub (the original mower option was a sickle bar), and though the Cub does run it pretty well much of my mowing is done in first gear, the older Cubs aren't quite strong enough to run that size deck in second gear. A buddy of mine has a numbered Cub which can run a 60" deck all day long in second gear since it has nearly twice the power.
While I love my Cub, Super A pretty well sums it up.
Super A wrote:If I could only own one old tractor, it would most likely be a Super A/100/130/140, simply because it is more versatile than the Cub

Re: How many times have you thought a SA/100/140 over a Cub?
never had the pleasure of owning/operating a SA/100/140 but have had cubs all my life so I can't answer this. I use the cubs for R&R(rest and relaxation). I maintain 14 acres where I live and 7 acres that belonged to my grandparents 35 miles away. My wife has a 48 cub w/42 deck and helps me mow when we want to just play and I grab one of my other 6 cubs(no one in particular) all w/42 decks except one that has a front blade. BUT.... if I want to get with it I use my L3130 KUBOTA 4X4 w/60 MMM. That sums up my thoughts on the original post.

we have a '56 cub loboy with a cycle bar mower,a'57 130 with breaking plow. middle buster, and cultivators. we also have 2 green tractors. Each one has its own jobs to do. 4 tractors for an acre n a half my be a bit much, but we try to match tractors to the job.

If I was going to buy a tractor for maintaining acreage this is the way I would look at it. Plus cost of maintenance of the tractor.

Re: How many times have you thought a SA/100/140 over a Cub?
It must be my day, another conversation that I can contribute to. I'll second the thought "depends what you intend to do with it and how fast you want it done". Two years when we bought our place in Mississippi I went looking for a Cub that I could use to mow the 2 acres with. I grew up with Cubs and A's on our farm in Ohio so it had to be a Farmall. The advice that I got at the time was that the max. mower that the Cub could handle was a 42" and that I should look for an SA so that I could put a bigger deck under it. So I did. I have a '50 SA with a Woods 59 and it cuts grass like a demon. I did get concerned about weight (driving over the spetic system) so I removed the rear wheel weights. Tractor still has plenty of traction and I feel better about runing over the septic tank.
Then, I bought a 23A disc to do a garden and found that the SA is a bit difficult in tight spaces. So, I bought a Cub ('53). It is the solution to doing a small/medium size garden. Handles the disc, cultivators and etc. very well and is easy to work in the confines of a garden. I als think it rides smoother (softer?) than the SA.
So, bottom line: depends on what you have to do. If you can manage it, having one of each is a real joy, I'm lucky and have space for them and all of their equipment.
Cost: I have found a good running example of either will cost about the same (~ $1500.00) around here (So. MS, LA, AL). Of course, like many other things you can pay just about as much as you want to. Cubs especially are very popular in areas where folks have large gardens and that results in some high prices being asked.

The answer to you question is twice. Once just be for I got my Super A and Once just before I got my 140.

Re: How many times have you thought a SA/100/140 over a Cub?
I grew up on a 50 acre farm in North Carolina. We had two mules and planted about six acres of tobacco, ten acres of corn, and a two acre garden. Plowing and cultivating with those mules was real work. In 1955 my Dad bought a Super"A"
With all of the implements. The transition from the mules was welcomed and we expanded to growing fourteen acres of tobacco. The Super "A" would do all we asked of it. I have three Cubs now, and a Ferguson TO-20. The Fergie is used for plowing and heavy work. I pull a log arch with the Fergie to bring logs to my small saw mill. My wife asks why do I need three Cubs? Well, one has a blade for the road grading and snow pushing, one has cultivators for the garden, and one has the drawbar for chores around the farm with a trailer attached.
If you are going to have just one tractor, maybe it should be a Super "A" or 140.
Last but not least. I am a Cub lover. A Cub will not do everything because of its size and power, but the work it will do makes it a mighty fine little tractor.

david.dickson…. Nice tractors and (clean) shop! Do you have pictures when you restored those tractors?
I bet you have stories to tell. I can only imagine how that was …the endless days … and how hard you worked…

Re: How many times have you thought a SA/100/140 over a Cub?
i was stuck between a super-a and a cub when i bought the cub. the super-a's are more money, at least that's what i have found. i also think that i super-a might tear up the lawn more, where the cub doesnt do much damage unless its really wet. i have a 60 danco c3 for my cub, i was used a IH cub cadet 147 with a 42" deck. i can mow my lawn in far less time with the cub then i could have with the 147. the cub with the 60" can mow my lawn in a little over an hour, i have 2 acres but its fairly open property without too many obstacles. the cub has a truely awesome turning radius for the size of the machine. i also used use a qa-42 blower with my 147, i would much rather use my cub. too many times of getting blasted in the face with cold wet snow for me to want to do anything with a snow-blower ever again. the cub is much easier for me to tolerate when it keeps the snow down on the ground not throwing it up in the air. i also swear that the cub burns less gas then the 147 did, the C60 is a reliable, fuel efficient sipper.i think that the cub burns less gas mowing the lawn partially because im doing it in less time. i also love the 7 gallon tank, i can fill it up and mow or plow snow for a month and still have gas left over.
the only thing i really dont like is i feel that the cub could use a little more power, but i think that we all probably feel that way. i know that im not going to turn the C60 into a fire breathing monster, but if i could get a few extra HP when it eventually comes time for a rebuild i would be a little happier in the power department. would like to get 18-20 hp out of it and im not sure thats possible. tractor runs well enough now that im not going to do anything except maintenance for the next few years.
these machines seem to excel running a mower, they cut great and belly mowers are fairly easy to locate. finding a good mower for an IH built cub cadet is a little more difficult.
between the choices of a cub vs. a super a you cant go wrong with either, i think the cub might be better when it comes runing a belly mower, and a super-a is probably better and pushihng snow, sa's have more weight......

My dad was born in 1938, 10 years old when they got the Super A. He said even after the tractor came along, they literally hoe'd ('Chopped') the tobacco and other crops continuously until it was laid by. Hard to imagine today with roundup ready, etc.....
