bookkeeping program

Postby John *.?-!.* cub owner » Sat Dec 07, 2013 2:57 pm

I am going to have to start keeping detailed records of my mothers financial transactions, and I was wondering what programs are reasonably priced, work well, and are easy to use. I appreciate suggestions, both as to good ones and ones to avoid.

John,
If it is just keeping up with checks and deposits, I recommend Quicken. Use it for my checking account and using the categories, you can very easily keep up with expenditures.

If you need something more sophisticated, try Quick Books. Use it for the wife's Quilting business. Little more cumbersome than Quicken, but more robust.

John...I have been using QuickBooks for years...both personally and for business.
It is very easy to learn and use.

Very basic, just deposits and expenses. Mom is in a nursing home and once she uses up her money will go on Medicaid, but I will have to prove everything money was spent on was necessary for her expenses.

I agree, Quicken will meet your needs very well. Should be available for less than forty bucks.

I used Quicken (and liked it) until I had to share files with others, than I was forced to go with the Microsoft office package. After using Excel for about four years now I really like it.

:Dito: Been using it for 20 years. They come out with a new version every year but if you buy it once it's good for several years. The basics don't change, just the bells and whistles.

I agree, Denny. And lately, some of the new versions tend to be a little buggy. I think they are getting like Microsoft; the users get to do the testing of the new features.

Does Quicken allow you to make notations on individual transactions as to what was bought with them?

John, here is the Quicken web site. It should answer a lot of your questions.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Mr. John,
Barnyard said he posted the link, but I could not see it. Just in case you can't see it either, here it is again.

If you have any questions, I think either Denny or I (and perhaps several others) will be able to assist you. Just ask.

Just to add to what the others have said. Quicken starter edition 2014 is the newest and most basic as far as I know. We have used the deluxe version for years but recently installed this and it is everything you would need for simple reconciliation and budgeting etc. 39.99 most place. :D
