A suspected thief popped the lock on my country barn and carried my small 2 tank compressor half way across the yard and just left it there. Tons of other hand tools were left untouched. I was away for several weeks.
At the same time as the local tractor pulls my neighbour Chris lost $1500 in power tools off his bench in an unlocked shop.
I know a lock is a start but what do you fellows do for your ounce of prevention? (THINKING ABOUT A DEER CAMERA.)

Re: Almost Stolen...what ounce of prevention?
I tend to keep my security devices to myself as much as possible to lessen the chance somebody attempts a work around, but I can say my three Border Collies play a part in it and are a great deterrent. There are a few intruders around with puncture wounds to the legs who will attest to that. I was working in the shop the other night while two of the dogs were on the porch (the third was laying outside the shop) I needed something off my trailer which was on the far side of the barn and out of sight from the house. When I rattled a chain on the trailer I quickly had two dogs quietly flying around the corner of the barn seeing who was there. I'm glad they look before they leap or at least sense the good guys before taking a chomp.
I've about worn this picture of my daughter out but it does rev up some conversations.
By the way, Bandit is quite adapt at hurling those concrete blocks from her forehead for quite a distance.
I'm curious as to why your intruder left the loot lay in the yard. Could he/they been scared off?

There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Barnyard has the right deterrent, and they don't come any better than border collies

Well the two borders in the photo are Flash and Bandit. I reckon any bandits getting into my barn may see a flash along with hearing a boom. Of course by time it gets to that point the girls should have already given the bad guy a dose of their medicine.

I have tried to point that out before. She can hurt a guy with a direct hit.

Re: Almost Stolen...what ounce of prevention?
We’re using night vision game cameras in the field for cattle theft problems. At first we tried the cell cameras but the cell network isn’t too reliable in the rural areas.
Around the equipment buildings, fuel area and house we use closed circuit video, dogs, game cameras and sometimes if needed “Sam and Colt”. The problem is with using Sam and Colt they (thieves) fire back sometimes and that part is very scary.
I like to show the pictures to the Sheriff and he takes it from there….. much safer.

Re: Almost Stolen...what ounce of prevention?
I love Border Collies.....and if something moves on the property, they know it. However in today's society I could see some scumbag trying to steal something, the dog bites him, then the scumbag turns around and sues you....or worse, the scumbag just kills the dog and helps himself. To me the cameras are the way to go.

Re: Almost Stolen...what ounce of prevention?
Dogs are the best deterrent. The attempt to sticky-finger is rare when a dog is known to be prowling the area.
For after the deed, Game Cameras or high quality video work well in the "key places" as long as you can keep them powered and have the area lit. The Infra-Red flashes do not reach very far.
If you must get involved, the most recognized sound is that of a pump shotgun being racked.
