"Take That" Busted Clutch Op Rod!

Postby LFEngineering » Wed Oct 23, 2013 5:17 am

After hooking up to the carry-all I pushed in the clutch and "bang" dead pedal. I figured the roll pin that connects the pedal to the shaft had sheared off or come loose. Nope, snapped the clutch operation rod in half. Upon further inspection I found rust 2/3 of the way thru the break so it must have been cracked for awhile, just waiting to break. I consider myself lucky; I was in neutral, not moving, and on flat ground in my back yard. Would have been way worse had it broke while trying to pull in the garage or backing up to some equipment.

Admittedly one of the best parts of having a machine shop in the garage is replacement parts are only a few hours away. Cut from stainless, it should outlast every other part on the tractor.

*For accuracy purposes, the picture was a little premature: I finished threading the rod up to the taper, opened up the pin hole to .375 and rounded off the corners before installing it.

Nice quick home repairs I like it congrats.

When my frame rusted out on my 55 jeep tractor while snowplowing it split in half on one rail. I jacked it up and c clamped a piece of channel to get it to my shop. I opened up the garage, cut a fish plate, welded it and continued plowing in 30 minutes.
The next summer I boxed a 73 jeep frame with 3/8" thick steel plate and soaked the frame with rust primer and army green paint. I went thru the differentials with lockers and seals, New brakes. We assembled everything from the old frame. Buying this jeep tractor from an old timer over two decades ago for $400 was the best $400 I ever spent. I was looking for a superpower when I came home with this jeep tractor.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.
