Rear Seal

Postby outdoors4evr » Fri Oct 18, 2013 9:37 am

Since replacing my crankshaft, I have been through 2 rear seals. Both have been machined to fit the new rear seal (CR29952).
I believe that my used crankshaft may have a groove where the old seal rode or a burr on it that is prematurely wearing out seals. They seem to run for about 100 hours without leaking. After they get about a years worth of use, they start leaking more and more and gets worse as the engine warms up.

I am not really interested in using a "stop leak" in the oil. My seal is less than 2 years old so I don't think it is dried out and cracked.

I am getting ready to pull the pan, flywheel, and rear seal retainer once again. I am thinking about polishing the end of the crank with crocus cloth. Is there a better way to restore this? Will I be taking material off the crank causing the seal to not contact the crank adequately?

What other things can I do to fix this issue?

when you pull it check to see if the seal is loose in the retainer

I took my 154 Lo-Boy apart to replace the rear main seal which I thought was bad and discovered the seal had come out of the retainer. I purchased a new seal (From the International dealer) but it also slipped into the retainer more easily than it should have. The retainer did not appear to be worn, the new seal just didn't appear to have an O.D. that was large enough. I had a buddy with a machine shop drill and tap the retainer with 4 small bolts and washers which overlapped the edge of the seal to keep it in place. I used black RTV sealant between the seal and the retainer and haven't had any leakage going on 3 years now.

Got the 184 torn apart. The rear seal has been spinning in the retainer (shiny metal on the outside of the seal where it used to be painted).
The seal also was working its way out of the retainer. It had moved about 1/8" away from the back seal stop. (Vote 1 for staking it in)

When I pulled the seal, there was sealer material between the retainer and the seal. Looked like indian head, but not really certain.

I cleaned the retainer and heated it up to 200 degrees and put in the new seal with locktite 680. The seal went in easily. The locktite was more fluid than I expected, so I drizzled some more around the engine side of the retainer at the seal and put it back in the oven (with the oven off). Let it and the oven cool down.
Staking the seal in is next.

Hope this works out. I am really thinking that the aluminum retainer expands a lot when heated. Maybe we are machining these retainers one or two thousandths too large for the new seals.

Was your seal and retainer the original or a replacement?

It was an R2 retainer that was machined and fitted with a new seal by a forum member providing such services.
No disrespect intended, they did a decent job, it just didn't last very long this time.
