Need help identifying this lathe

Postby Rick Spivey » Mon Oct 14, 2013 7:01 pm

Here is my latest snag from this past weekend. Got this metal lathe with 4 chucks and a ton of cutting tools, mics, etc. Here are just a couple of pics to see if anyone has an idea of the maker and/or vintage, It runs well, seems to be in usable shape.

Thanks for any leads on this one, I would love to find info and maybe a manual!

Wow! You are the lucky one. Sure would like to play around with a metal lathe one of these days. :{_}:

I agree, great snag!! Seeing that key in the chuck scares me half to death!!! I went to use a Bridgeport at work a while back and someone had left the 3/4" box end wrench on the drawbar. Sure glad I noticed it before I turned it on!! Finding a nice well kept lathe is a great find. Finding one with all the goodies is a home run!!! :{_}: :{_}:

The keys were all in the chucks to insure I had one for each chuck. Believe it or not, each one uses a different size square end. I WILL remove it before firing it up! That is a too common mistake, one of my ways has some damage to the outside of the rail because "something" was in the chuck, and extended further than expected. Btw, this appears to be an Atlas or Craftsman (apparently Atlas made some Craftsman) 6 inch lathe, but unsure of the exact model number yet.

I thought it looked like an Atlas. Craftsman lathes were the same machine.

Nice machine you have there. It Looks alot like an ATLAS mode D, made in the mid 1930's.

Check out this Website. It has a ton of info on Atlas and many other lathe brands : http://www.lathes.co.uk/atlas/

Rick, I agree with it being an Atlas/Craftsman lathe. There should be an ID tag either on the end or the backside of the base. After you find the model number, you can contact Clausing to buy parts and a manual( http://www.akama.com/company/Clausing_S ... 92269.html ). You can also do a search for Altlas lathe images and I saw a picture of one like yours there. I've had several Altlas/Chraftsman lathes and my 10"Chraftsman is what I've had for the last 10 years. You can also do ebay searches for parts and there's an Atlas lathe club on Yahoo.
Have fun with it.
