This is from a 154 that I'm fixing for a friend. A few years ago I said yes, when I should have said no.   He was so happy with the results of my first repair (replaced rear main seal) that anytime something goes wrong, I get a call. :)

I have never seen a cub gasket that bad. A Continental, yes, but never a cub.

I haven't seen that many, but I thought it was excessive. I shot and posted the pics to get some feedback and your response confirms my suspicion. Thanks, John.

Bill, I've seen blown head gaskets before, but never one this bad. I'm interested in understanding what the root cause of why this failure was so massive.

Before bill answers, I am going to make a guess that it was leaking, maybe from a warped head or improperly torqued bolts and they went ahead and drove it for an extended period of time rather than fixing right away.

Yeah - that's bad. Guessing Johns right about it having been let go a while too long. I hope the deck was alright. Did you put a straight edge on it Bill? I'm sure you did, just wondering.

That head gasket looks like the one cub that I got at a garage sale; we now call her Sophie.

That head looked brand new when bill was done with it. It was the nicest part on the tractor.
