I still have quite a bit of the tractor restoration paint from valspar for finish coating but have no primer. Can anyone recommend a compatable primer that will work well with the aformentioned
thanks,

Re: Primer
I've used Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer underneath the Valspar Restoration Series paint.
Although, it was 3 weeks or so between the primer and color coats.
That was a few years ago. Still looks pretty good if I do say so myself. Only problem was I couldn't get the paint to flow out smooth no matter how much I put on. I think that's a gun/operator issue. Using a cheap $12.99 Harbor Freight spray gun probably wasn't helping things much.

Re: Primer
The local restoration guy here (does body work on autos/trucks/tractors) advised me to a) get all rust/paint off that comes off with a wire brush/sandpaper, b) paint Rustoleum Heavy Rust Primer on with brush x 2, c) put on finish coats (I used IH red).

Re: Primer
I guess it depends what sort of finish you're looking for. If you're just wanting to protect the metal then brush on a good coat of rustoleum before the finish coat, but if you're looking for a smooth factory finish on all of the sheet metal then apply a coat of epoxy primer. (You can find it at an automotive paint store) After it dries...water sand it with 400 grit wet/dry paper till all of the sand scratches are gone. Wipe it clean with prep-clean and a dust cloth and it's ready for the finish color coat. Hope this at least adds to your options. Good luck, Papa.
