front/rear weight proportions

Postby frederick » Sat Sep 28, 2013 11:47 pm

did a search and came up blank...does anybody know the approximate dead weight proportions, front vs rear, of a standard cub with/without a belly blade and maybe half tank of gas? 40% front/60% rear? 45/55?

thanks!

60% rear and 40% front would be my guess may even be a little lighter in the front

There was a topic on this very thing a couple of years ago, but I cannot seem to find it in my searching of the forum... I think Boss is right about the proportions on weight.... He usually is!

Contest a few years ago guessing the weight difference between the left and right rear of the tractor.

Think the tractor weight center was previously discussed. Thinking the center of weight was just in front of the operator's platform.

That is something that I am curious about especially in a lo-boy with no weights, turfs and touch control. Probably on the lighter side of the weight spectrum but to my mind at least 60% would be on the rear :?: :?:

I have a brochure for Cub and Lo-Boy that lists (with operator):

Cub as 620 front and 1,220 rear

Lo-Boy as 520 front and 1,320 rear

TM also has a couple that list the same weights for a Cub.

Just in case anybody really wants to figure where the center of gravity on a Cub is:
Weight X Arm = Moment. Total Moment divided by total weight = CG ( center of gravity ). Do not add up the total Arms because that number is of no use to you. This formula works Forward/Aft and for Lateral CG also.

Sounds like you guys have the weights, now just need to get a tape measure and figure out the "Arms".

Good Luck.

I do not know anything more than is in the previous information, but can tell that on a cub with both rear and front wheel weights, if you attach a bracket to the rear implement pads on the torque tube and put a jack under it, the jack will lift the front off the ground.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Well that is interesting I guess... but doesn't answer the basic question .. what does a Lo-Boy weigh .. no operator, no gas, no weights.. :?: I would assume that the average weight for an operator may have been given as say 175 lbs or so, gas .. 7 gallons weighs ... approx 42.5 lbs so that reduces the max weight by about 210 lbs or so .....

Trying to figure out is a U-Haul 5x9 with ramp will be able to handle my Lo-Boy and a mill along with a few other parts. Doesn't look like they have a 6x12 available at all :(

From my archives of useless information saved on my computer...

Nebraska Test No. 575 conducted in 1956 shows the Cub in Test "K"...Operating weight, unballasted with operator of 1,877 pounds. Static weight is listed as 1,090 pounds on the rear and 612 pounds on the front. The operator, like me, apparently weighed 175 pounds...

Test No. 386 in the fall of '47 shows an operating weight, unballasted with operator of 1,477 pounds. Static weight listed as 794 pounds on the rear and 508 on the front. Evidently the same operator...

Keep in mind the '47 didn't have hydraulic lift, and had a smaller wheel/tire combination...

"Farm Equipment Guide" lists the F-Cub Lo-Boy weight as 1655 lbs.

But then, same source lists the F-Cub Standard as weighing 1426 lbs. Under I-Cub the tractor weighs 1620 lbs.

Only sure method is to weigh the tractor at the local elevator. In lieu of an actual weight, use the highest weight and then add a couple hundred pounds, just to be on the safe side.

Eugene:

It needs to fit on this:

Image

Capacity
Empty weight: 1,240 lbs.
Max load: 1,650 lbs.
Maximum Gross Weight (trailer plus load): 2,890 lbs.

Gonna be a bit of a haul up here from down there.

Frederick ..

I apologize if this got hijacked, didn't intend for that  . Hope this is useful in some way to you.

Any way you look at it the trailer load weight limit is going to be very close to the tractor weight. Tractor probably would be fine but you wouldn't want to add any additional load/weight to the trailer.

Frederick:

Please excuse another non-hijack comment .. but this is kinda a bit on the let's play it safe front.

Image

I had thought originally that the 5x9 would suffice to haul a lo-boy. But the more I thought about it, the more I consulted with my friends who have way more experience hauling Cubs than I do, the more the pucker factor began increasing especially since a lo-boy is going to be right at the max weight for this trailer meaning I can't add anything to the load. For the last 3 or 4 weeks, a 6x12 simply was not available for rent here, so I was trying to find any and all other options short of spending between 2 and 3 G's on a new tandem.

So I called this morning ostensibly to find out if I could exchange the 5x9 for a 6x12 in NY. Surprised the heck out of me -- they had one available for me .. so now.. I have reserved this for Monday night:

Image

Hydraulic brakes with sensors. Increased load rating, Ramp for easy loading. I am much more relaxed and looking forward to the fetching trip :{_}: and definitely more comfortable knowing that the lo-boy is not going to even test the limits of the trailer or our Odyssey.

Safety is always foremost in my mind even if my wallet is screaming at me .. cheap don't work. Far better to be safe than sorry. Em and I are worth a lot more than the extra coin it will cost. :D

The 6X 12 weights about 2300 lbs, cub 1600, so you should be ok I think the Odyssey has a 3500 lb towing rating
