Best place to buy a clutch pressure plate

Postby Olred » Fri Sep 27, 2013 1:06 pm

Well I toasted the pin on my pressure plate in my cutting tractor(1949 cub) and I am looking to redo the clutch. I already have a new clutch disk and I'm looking for a good source/quality replacement. I see that stiner tractor offers a kit for $180 with a new disk, pressure plate, and roller bearing throw out bearing but my worry is quality. I also have had great luck with TM as far as quality, but I see there pressure plate is $204 and throwout bearing is the grafite type for $75ish. So I am looking for input on which to go with so I'm not doing this again anytime soon. The sad part is I just had it apart for a rear main seal:/

I know nothing about them but I saw this on Ebay and they are about 100 miles from me. They have excellent feedback and an 800 number.

Also, I remember BIGHOSS from Tennessee mentioning a place near him that rebuilds pressure plates reasonably. You could send him a PM asking for contact info.

For rebuilding clutches and pressure plates, ask any local drag racer or stock car racer for the best rebuilder. A couple references pointing you to the same shop should get you the needed work done.

Not making recommendations but I just put a clutch in my 53....USA clutch pressure plate and disc rebuilt by St Louis Clutch 75.00....USA graphite TO bearing and pilot bushing by TM tractor 90.00....Do not mention the finger measurements on the pressure plate as they will void the warranty if you set them to 1 1/4.....They believe 7/8 is the correct setting...That is how their shipped...We had a discussion about that.....Of course mine are 1 1/4... Dave

Personally I would not want to chintz on the clutch and TOB. Tom only sells quality stuff that he is happy with and seems most of us are really pleased with his ethos.

Bill has a good idea when it comes to resurfacing the clutch or pressure plate. It may pay to investigate that route. But for the TOB .. use TM Tractor, I know I do.

Your question on feedback has my interest focussed on that throw-out roller bearing option. I would like to know what the life expectancy is compared to the original. Any members here give that one a shot?
I am thinking about it. If it works well maybe TM will carry it?

The T/O bearing that came in cubs from the factory have lasted many years, if you keep them maintained they give no trouble. I have tried the bearing style , I do not care for it. they may be better now, but I do not think they can make them perform without a flange for the bearing to be stabilized on.

Boss,
Funny, I was thinking about you adopting the petronics kits and I said -I bet that forward thinking Boss might have tried it. Thanks for the comment on the flange; that is the kind of thing where a sketch is worth a thousand words. Can you elaborate on the "flange" a bit?

OK here goes :D on a Chevy for example their is a round snout on the cover that hold the front bearing in the transmission, the T/O bearing slides back and forward on it. There is very little play between the inside of the T/O bearing and the flange or snout on the cover. This keeps it very stable, the cub does not have this, lots of side to side movement on the hanger that the T/o beating rides on in a cub. This is not a problem with the original bearing. It is with the Chevy type bearing.
