Does any one have a Nelson (or other) part number for a 184 loboy? It's the short, underhood style with a 90° turnout,
NOT the long, vertical Cub type. Thanks!

C&G has them. Go to their site and search that PN or "184 muffler" and it'll come up. A bit pricey at $109.50

Try your local auto parts store. They may have a cross reference to the muffler.
I checked C&G earlier and thought $109- was a bit much.
My thought and I haven't tried it. Pipe nipple from elbow on top of manifold and then one of the screw on mufflers from a larger Kohler engine.

Try giving Hamilton Bob (Site Sponsor) a call, I didn't see it listed (he had F-Cub mufflers) but he may not have everything he has listed, he has a huge building full of parts! He may be able to direct you to a reasonable source if he doesn't have one.
Good luck,
Good luck,

Re: MUFFLER / 184 Loboy
Thanks for the tips.
That is a good IH number.
If I could get the old one off, I could repair it. Without pulling the int/exh off the engine, it looks like you could pull the gas tank and put some heat to the elbow.
Yes, $109 is insane. The local Csse/IH dealer wants $126!!
I spent part of the morning going through my parts house's muffler catalogue, but found nothing with a threaded inlet.
Kohler, you say?
Bob doesn't show one, but I'll give Joe a call tomorrow.

Re: MUFFLER / 184 Loboy
Kohler and other small engines use a screw on a pipe thread muffler up to at least 21 hp engines. I don't know the inlet diameter, only mentioned it as a possibility - requiring a bit more research.fordyford wrote:Kohler, you say?
In the event the muffler will not unscrew from the elbow. You can cut off the muffler close to the elbow and then cut the pipe down to the threads inside the elbow. Should be able to remove the remaining pieces of the muffler.

Yea, I'd try cutting the pipe nipple and just replacing it as Eugene mentioned. Also, if the muffler just has a hole in it, or is cracked, I'd sure try welding it prior to spending $100 for a new one. I doubt you'll find a Kohle muffler that will fit, as most are only 1" pipe thread, and I believe that one is 1.5".
I have welded several mufflers and they're pretty easy to weld with a mig welder. Just low amperage and keep moving. It will look like globs of crap, but you can grind it down and make it look better.

Yep, all the Kohlers that I looked at today had 1" NPT. This one needs the end repaired and a turnout added, just neglected by the PO. A pretty easy welding job, compared to getting it off. Just another IH engineering challenge.

Re: MUFFLER / 184 Loboy
I think it is 1 1/4 pipe thread. Can't you just put in half of a pipe nipple and find a small muffler that clamps on conventionally?

That's down on the plan list. Guess I'll have to get off my wallet if I want to keep it stock.

Just pointing out that screw on mufflers larger than 1" OD are out there. 1 1/4" is pretty common and not very expensive, usually less than $15-

Re: MUFFLER / 184 Loboy
UPDATE....
For others in need, Hamilton Bobs has them now, $49.
Unfortunately with the outlet turnout in place, installation screw-in requires pulling the fan, shroud, and pulley for clearance. Or freeing up the pipe elbow (dream on) and swinging it out. Or pulling the int/exh manifold.
