IH Silver?

Postby PVF1799 » Fri Sep 13, 2013 6:18 am

I've seen rear rims painted in 50 Shades of Gray - oh no I mean Silver:D

What is the BEST Paint for rear rims that most closely emulates the original IH Silver?

Go easy on me - I know I said I'd not post more painting questions....

The rear rims were originally galvanized, so you're looking for a close match to that. A lot of guys have a lot of different preferences but I think Rustoleum or Hammerite hammered silver is about as close as anything and looks really nice too. It's easy to apply, hides minor imperfections well and seems to be quite durable. You can find it at about any Wal Mart or big box store.

Kenbrandt, I've seen them powder coated and they really look sharp....A guy told me it was done for around 100 dollars....But it was awhile ago and I forget if it was apiece or for the pair....But it was real nice....And close to original...I don't know much about the process....Dave

Agree with Gary, the Rust-Oleum hammered silver is a great choice.

But if your budget allows, you might try having them powder coated. They'll hold up better than spray paint.

Here's some Rust-Oleum hammered silver shots: https://www.google.com/search?q=rustole ... =882&dpr=1

Thanks all - between the parts and the tools I needed for this job and the ones after this - I won't be able to have them powder coated. Especially considering that I've got $700 of rubber to buy for the rear. I think I'll test the hammered on a piece of shop press metal to see how I like it...

We used caseIH silver. Inexpensive, looks good, easy to touch up.

I just learned that CaseIH has an Iron Guard Paint for restoration that is meant to mimic the original galvanized color. I'm gonna get a can of that and see which I like best.

Ken:

The Iron Gard is a good choice. But I know you have been pretty finicky with a lot of the parts etc., on Rex so have you actually thought about having the rims re-dipped? I googled Galvanizing Co near Altamont NY and found this list -- Galvanizing Services Suppliers serving Upstate New York It may not be all that expensive .. and will definitely be a lot closer to original.

I believe the galvanizing used on the rims was done by electroplating rather than hot dipping. I doubt it'll look original.

Beware that hot dipped galvanized will not even vaguely resemble the original finish. There is also a GM wheel silver (I have forgotten the years) that people like a lot. It may be what Krylon calls Dull Aluminum.

Case I/H Argent in the spray can. One can will do both rear rims.

I wouldn't recommend powder coating, if you are planning to work the tractor. Scratches would be impossible to touch up. Ed

No worries on the powder coating - I priced it today locally - $150 - $275 per rim.....

And yes this tractor will need to be a working tractor on the farm - It's just never sitting out in the rain again.....EVER - Dad has been warned :D

I just used the hammered silver by rustoleum. Here is a link to my recent post. Didn't come out as "hammered" as I would have liked but I'm happy with it. Will be taking them to the tire shop tomorrow.

I also use the Rustoleum Hammered Silver. I'm VERY happy with it and it has a very durable finish. The amount of "hammered" look depends on how thick you apply the paint, but if you paint it in light coats, it will not look very hammered at all.
