Ferguson 20 ID
After reading the Cub vs Sub compact thread I have question. I see where Dave (Pickerandsinger) has a couple of British Fergusons. I have a Ferguson 20 without an ID plate. How do you tell a TE (British) from a TO (US)?
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: Ferguson 20 ID
No trick question Bob. Ferguson made a TE-20 in Britain that was shipped here and made a TO-20 in the US. I guess I could check to see if the bolts are metric or not.

Re: Ferguson 20 ID
I don't think you will find metric either way. I think the TEs had a lot of Whitworth fasteners. I don't know if the TOs were converted to US or not.
Seems like I once knew some differences to tell them apart, but no longer remember what they were. There must be a Ferguson board with participants that know. Maybe an engine serial number will tell you the year and thus where it was built.

Jim, all electrical had burnt in a fire under the hood. I have replaced all that with NAPA parts several years ago when I was in my BC age. (Before Cubs)

Re: Ferguson 20 ID
Thanks Dave, but I have been to that as well as a few other Wikipedia pages and have not found what I need. I have tried several Ferguson sites and even emailed some for info. Evey thing I get back says to look for specific numbers on different parts of the engine that I can not find. To clarify, I can find the engine just not the numbers.

Re: Ferguson 20 ID
This is what I found out from ....John(UK)...fergusontractors@hotmail.com when I was rebuilding one a few years back...
Check the material of the Transmission housing, just scratch the paint to see if it is an aluminum type or cast iron. Cast Iron is a TO20 and Aluminum (or actually Magnesium Electron) is a TE20. . Look at the brake drums on a TO20 they are 11" dia but on a TE20 they are 14" diameter. If you have a TO20 the casting dates for the axle trumpet housings are on the front behind the brake shaft and on the TE20's they are on the side of the Centre axle housing just forward of the round inspection ports. Normally the engines are different but no use going into that as the engine could have been changed.
I do know , you can't use the U.S. starter in the English tractor...flywheel damage very quickly.
Here's the thread...

Re: Ferguson 20 ID
instead of scratching the paint, use a magnet to detect cast iron vs. aluminum / magnesium alloy.
The magnet will not stick to the aluminum.

I don’t know why I didn’t think of that. It seems the older I get the more I think “in the box” for common sense things. Thanks for bringing that up.

Re: Ferguson 20 ID
Thanks guys, cast iron trans cover and 11" brakes on mine so it looks like I have the US made TO-20.
I appreciate the help.

Re: Ferguson 20 ID
Bill, the easiest visual way to check is the TO 20 has a plate on top of the transmission (8) bolts, that is removable....The TEA 's plate is part of the steering box...TE Tractor England...TO Tractor Overseas...DaveBarnyard wrote:After reading the Cub vs Sub compact thread I have question. Re: Ferguson 20 ID
Barnyard the US T0-20 and TE-20 have 18mm plugs. The Eng. TEA-20 has 14mm plugs.
At 1000RPM the dwell meter on a TO-20 is 21', the TE-20 is 12' and flywheel at 5' and on a TEA-20 it is 18' and flywheel is 7'
