Awhile back I got stuck  with some clay soil and amended it with horse manure....Well here is the finished conglomeration on one of my gardens...The other has to wait till fall....The forum was very helpful for the most part although I did detect a couple of non believers.... Anyhow here's a planting of beans in it along with a few weeds...Jeeez must be the horse manure, you think....Thanks for the input, it seems to have worked out....Dave

Looking good. Try to get a cover crop on, in the fall. I use winter rye, but there are others. Don't be stingy, with the composted horse manure. Ed

Horse manure has a LOT of weed seeds.

In NW PA, soils are clayey and gardening can be a challenge with six months winters (snow on the ground) nearly every year. I put in raised beds for vegetable gardening to get away from water-logged, heavy soil. I bought high grade topsoil that had been treated to eliminate weed seeds. After two winters, my expensive ($30/yd) topsoil packed hard and clumped so bad I could hardly dig in it. I turned it by hand with a spade and added a lot of cow manure expecting weeds to be a problem, and they were. I let the soil sit a bit and applied a herbicide and have been pulling weeds all season. Now, I have fairly clean soil that really benefits my vegetables. Too bad the local deer herd has recognized my work because they have completely consumed my sweet potato crop and have visited my green bean on occasion.

Not from my ample experience over the last 20 years getting well-rotted manure from a local horse farm. Only if the composting is managed properly, will the temperatures be high enough over a sustained period of time to kill weed seeds. If you are getting manure and wood shavings, as I was, the wood decomposition "robs" some of the already low nitrogen in horse manure and I think this also lowers the pile temperature. It did help loosen up the soil and "dilute" some of the New England "petrified" potatoes.

I expect alot of the seeds come from the feed thrown in the stall and then cleaned out ....The fellow I get my manure from has hay bags in various locations in and out..( I've contracted sorta with him to haul away his manure)....I really don't have a problem with the weeds, I just threw that in the conversation as a little humor....I have a small Mantis tiller that I regularly use in the gardens...The horse manure weeds if thats what you wish to call them, don't really grow any faster than the regular weeds....Good exercise  In any event around here you pay dearly for top soil, that ain't top soil, and bags of manure, I mean really  I'm pretty happy with the old fashioned way....Thanks for the comments :thanx: Dave

Yep! Cow manure better. By the time it goes thru all the cows stomachs. The weed seeds are gone.

Most of the fellows around here that have cattle use the manure them selves as they also raise corn....I'm really happy with the horse manure.... :D

Dave:

Check out the local chicken, goat and sheep farmers. High value manure that usually ends up sitting in piles. This stuff is really rich and produces like crazy. Excellent amendment to the horse manure bulk that you are using. As Ed said, plant a winter cover crop and let all that wonderful green bio-mass enrich your soil for you :!: The old folks were pretty smart

Hi Rudi, Well the chicken pluckers run a big plant over the road a bit and now charge for their chicken manure...Not many small or medium chicken farms around here as with the goat and sheep spreads....Maybe you could load me up a load of chicken manure and bring it down to Cecils when you come   ....I could get Diana to go to Rhinebeck with Em and you could come out here and spread it while I work on my cubs while reading your manuals   .....No :?: :?: :?: ....I thought not, but worth a try  Dave.....See you in Oct...
