It's really crazy how the subconscious mind can work. Several years ago, while working at the research center, I was assembling a prototype diesel engine. At the end of the day, I put my tools away and headed home, gonna make smoke in the morning. About 2a.m., I awoke with a start! I got out of bed, got dressed and went back to work. I took the front of the engine back apart, tightened the camshaft sprocket bolts and re-assembled it. That would have been a very serious error on my part! I still made smoke that morning. I think that a lot of times, my mind re-plays the previous days activities, quite a few times I've awoke with a solution to a problem. Hence the saying "I think I'll sleep on it"

Some of my best design work was done while I was mowing the lawn.

Yes sometimes it is best to walk away and think about it a little or take a nap. Many of my life probelms have been solved in my sleep and many started when I woke up. I slept a lot when I was married to the ex. I feel certain the brain index's what you did during that day while you sleep that night but my problem nowdays is remembering who I am the next morning so I can go to the right box to find the answer.
