.22 LR Birdshot
Does this have enough of a load to kill rabbits at 10-15 feet? I am getting overrun with cottontails and would like to decrease the population.

Re: .22 LR Birdshot
Wait until rabbit season. Rabbit stew.
Pellet gun works on rabbits, much cheaper to shoot. Bird shot will work but ruins the meat. 22 short or long rifle would be better, also cheaper than bird shot.

Re: .22 LR Birdshot
Any .22 caliper head shot will take care of a rabbit. (even the shot shells)
Note: Rabbits are not really safe to eat until after the first freeze (when the diseased ones die off).

Re: .22 LR Birdshot
Rabbits are very easily killed, if one can get that close to them then a good loud roar would likely scare them to death Hit them with a .22 and they are dead.

Bob,
Get yourself some of these;
They are a sub-sonic load so they only make a "pop".

Re: .22 LR Birdshot
Most people use the "birdshot" .22 caliper for indoor hunting. (won't damage the barn if you miss)
I also like to use the subsonic rounds so as to not bother the neighbors.

Re: .22 LR Birdshot
I have a RWS pellet rifle that will take out a woodchuck at about 40 yards and is very accurate. I haven't had that good of luck with .22 shot shells.

Re: .22 LR Birdshot
Outdoors4evr hit it on the head. The rabbits and bunnies are peeing and pooping in my shop and living under the pallets that we stack hay on. Unless the dog is chasing them, they'll let you walk up pretty close. I have an old Sears bolt action .22 that I bought when I was a kid, so I think I'll try that before investing in a pellet gun. Now to see if I can find some ammo. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Re: .22 LR Birdshot
Bob like Peter suggested since you have a 22 already you might want to try some of those CCI CB rounds. I shoot the CB shorts and they don't make any more noise than a pellet rifle. I shoot them in several different rifles with different length barrels. In a heavy old bolt action I have with a long barrel they are really quiet with no crack a all. My grandson was down at the house last week. He likes to shoot ducks with his 12 ga. and high powered loads. We went out in the backyard and I handed him my 22 and a few and a few CB shorts. He shot one then looked at me kind of disappointed. I don't think it made enough noise for him. Anyway nobody had any idea we were out in the back yard targeting practicing on Sunday afternoon.
